"Its axiomatic that air-travel isn't very green, but how many of us would be prepared to go as far for our commitment to the environment as Barbara Haddrill who works at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) and is travellingthe 3,608 miles from Cardiff to Australia to be a bridesmaid at her friend's wedding by land and sea?"
An interesting related post is here:

Land and sea travel may well have costs over air travel, given that you have to support the road/rail infrastructure and so on. I've no idea how it all works out in the end, but I wonder if air travel is actually not so much worse than land and sea over long distances than you might think.

Fine edition of the Carnival Rich, proving yet again that the whole is often greater than the sum. Harlan

Harlan,
Cheers. You're too kind.
Alex,
You raise an interesting point, although the lack of hard data in the post you link to is problematic.
The Grauniad certainly did a comparison of transport methods last year around the time of the G8 looking at the best way one could have got to Edinburgh, concluding that bus travel was the best. (Air travel was by someway the worst).
I'm not sure if infrastructure has been taken into account in these calculations. (Bear in mind that coming up with credible estimates of how much carbon this or that road generated is unlikely to be straightforward or uncontroversial).
There are also other issues beyond mere output, such as the suggestion that contrails also impact upon global climate.

Thanks for the support. You're quite right about the link. Hopefully it's fixed for now...
