Genies (jinn) are actually more an Arab folk belief than an "Islamic theory", but Muhammad believed in them and mentioned them in the sacred writings as being real entities, so now Islam is stuck with them.

A good example of how religion can freeze human thinking at a particular bygone era's level of stupidity.

Trolls, incidentally, can be vanquished with a simple "delete" command -- nothing so troublesome as a lawsuit.
