You should definitely pick up the whole Congos album (Heart of the Congos) that "Fisherman" comes off of. Maybe the best all-around reggae record I've ever heard, for combining the weird, dub stuff with strong songs and vocal harmonies.

I absolutely second the comment about Heart of the Congos. Crucial. Roots reggae with a heavy dub vibe.
In terms of straight dub, my favorites are Tappa Zukie's "In Dub", Keith Hudson's "Pick a Dub", both of which (like "Heart of the Congos) can be found on the Blood & Fire label.
I also quite enjoy Scientist's dub albums on Greensleeves, especially "Scientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse of The Vampires".
Enjoy!

This may be a bit of a naive comment, but you should check out the dub box sets that Trojan Records put out. I think there's two of them. They have a lot of dub classics, but also a lot of the more obscure stuff. It's a good history lesson in dub, at least for its early years.

I should have mentioned in my previous comment that the Tappa Zukie track that you posted can be found on Tappa Zukie In Dub. So, if you like that track, you'll love the album.
I also just thought of two other recommendations...King Tubby "Dub Gone Crazy" and "Dub Gone 2 Crazy", also on Blood and Fire.

Thanks all. Much appreciated.
I'm definitely going to pick up that Congo's record ASAP. 'Fisherman' is a highlight from this collection for me. Love it.
The Blood & Fire site looks great. I see a lot of familiar names there- namely Yabby You. I have a mix tape with 'No Tarry Yah Version' on it which I often find myself setting on repeat. Great tune.
Andrew: Not a naive comment at all. I've seen the Trojan sets around (and heard great things about them), but have held off picking them up for reasons I can't really explain. I think it's because I've shifted my purchases away from CD's and more towards vinyl. My reason for polling you all is because there is an overwhelming amount of available material out there; I thought I'd try to focus my digging by picking up some Earfuzz approved selections.
I think I'll grab another (larger) CD comp and look for the suggested albums on vinyl.
Thanks again.

All those recommendations are great. A few more:
- Lee Perry: "Blackboard Jungle Dub" and "Scratch and Company: Chapter one".
- "Africa Must Be Free By 1983": Augustus Pablo producing Hugh Mundell. Both the original and the dub.
- Burning Spear "Living Dub" volumes 1 & 2
- Black Uhuru "Dub Factor"

recently picked up "Jonny Greenwood Is the Controller: Compiled By Jonny Greenwood"
Also a Trojan compilation, with tracks selected by Jonny Greenwood, Radiohead. It is all good but has some really outstanding tracks. I've been listening a lot to track 8, Lee Perrys, Black Panta, Brilliant. Also the first track "dread are the controller" by Linval Thomas have been on heavy rotation.
I can also second the other Trojan boxsets. Value for money in the extreme. I have the three cd Trojan Dancehall Roots Boxset and its absolutely brilliant.

Cry Tuff Dub Encounter, Chapter 1 by Prince Far I...totally opened my ears to dub when i heard it for the first time in the 70s and still sounds amazing now.
Not sure if you have an emusic sub (or if not can still get a free trial) but that and lots of other dub stuff...incl great albums by Keith Hudson, Tapper Zukie, King Tubbie, Lee Perry, Augustus Pablo...is on there if you want a good listen before shelling out for vinyl

Again, all great recommendations.
The "Rush I Some dub" is a dub version of Linval Thompson's "Black Princess", off his album Cool Down (aka Don't Cut off your Dreadlocks)- highly recomended, as well as his album I Love Marijuana, (which is where "Dread are the Controller" is from)on Trojan (tho both those may be a little hard to find).
Yabby You's albums on Blood & Fire are all KILLER.
Some other gems:
Leroy Smart- Mr. Smart in Dub (on Jamaican Recordings- a great reissue label that specializes in vintage Dub)
Augustus "Gussie" Clarke - Black Foundation Dub (on Motion, another good vintage dub label)
Johnny Clarke - A Ruffer Version: At King Tubby's 1974-1978 (on Trojan)

Some great tracks here, thanks. I know the others have said it but the Congo's track is a deadset classic, as is the album it is of.
A couple of my faves, perhaps a little diff from the other suggestions here;
Linton Kwesi Johnson - Fantastically political poet who's backed by the Dennis Bovell dub band. Not all his stuff is on the money, but when he hits it he hits it hard (and heaaaaavvvvvvy!!)
On a modern dub tip check out kiwi outfit Fat Freddy's drop - real nice soulful sounds.
Birminghams Different Drummer label put out a great 10 year anniversary comp a few years and I just think that this is essential listening.
Nice blog, thanks for the tunes!

Saw Linton Kwesi Johnson supporting Siouxsie & The Banshees in Inverness ( Scotland ) sometime in the 80's...got to meet him after the show and asked for his autograph...the only bit of paper I had on me was my airline ticket so he signed that... I think he was a bit surprised at someone wanting his autograph!

alright. linton kwesi johnson looks pretty interesting.
contemporary dub from new zealand sounds good. the only contemporary dub i've heard is a few tracks from victor rice. i dug it. more guitar delay than the roots stuff.
nice. looking forward to getting some time/some dollars together for an expedition into the flea markets/shops here in nyc and nj. soon.
thanks again everyone. i'm really psyched about your suggestions.

Don't forget to check out the work of Adrian Sherwood for the On-U Sounds label. I started with Threat to Creation, which is billed to the bands Creation Rebel and New Age Steppers, but Sherwood and his cohorts had a fluid idea of the term "band". I like Threat to Creation because Keith Levene (from PiL) played on it, and because Sherwood used some non-traditional sound sources (such as amp noise) to expand the boundaries of dub.

The most essential Dub-Album: Augustus Pablo - King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown. I think it was rereleased on Shanchie Records with some bonus tracks.

i second the a. pablo (king tubby meets rockers). the best. also not sure what's on the burning spear dub people have posted, but if it doesn't have the sides released on "garvey's ghost," you gotta check that out.

Thanks again. Augustus Pablo is on the list; as is Adrian Sherwood.
I have Burning Spear's 'Marcus Garvey' album in digital format and love it. Great stuff.
After posting, I dug around and found some quality reggae/dub podcasts. They've enabled me to hear some samples from the albums you all suggested (and more). YES. It's amazing how smoothly an hour of dub passes by.

Fisherman... awesome track. You should check out the recent-ish Blood & Fire issued double CD of Fisherman versions (Horace Andy, Big Youth, Max Romeo, Gregory Isaacs, amongst others) remastered by Rhythm and Sound - it's very good indeed.
Speaking of Rhythm and Sound, a must-have is their With the Artists album - cavernous digidub with the most gorgeous vocals from the likes of Cornell Campbell and Paul St Hilaire. Essential. Seriously!
Other recommendations.. as others mentioned, Linton Kwesi Johnson - LKJ in Dub, also Bass Culture and Forces of Victory. Any Dub Syndicate stuff, usually on On-U Sound records I think. Also there's a really good French label called Jarring Effects, mostly digidub, all good, esp anything by High Tone.
One more - a reggae classic - Dr Alimantado, the Best Dressed Chicken in Town (on Greensleeves records).
