Gravatar Hey there,

Great post for my favourite track of Black Sheep's debut. I had always assumed that the piano came from a eq'd version of Minnie Riperton's 'Les Fleur': know I now!

Really good stuff over here by the way, I have had you linked for a while but for whatever reason haven't been checking in regularly, a fallacy I'll correct from here on in.

Nice one,

Dan

Gravatar This "anatomy of a sample" idea is terrific. I hope you post more.

PS. What's with the Ann Coulter link?

Gravatar I love these posts, it's quite amazing how much Three Dog Night have been sampled on great Hip Hop records.

Diamond D and MC Lyte used those same drums for 'Best Kept Secret and Stetsasonic,D-Nice, Big Daddy Kane, Three Times Dope,Nice & Smooth,Nine, Kam and I am sure there are many others, have all used samples from Three Dog Night.

The rest of the samples are dope as well.

Gravatar Diamond D for 'Best Kept Secret' and MC Lyte for 'I Am The Lyte'

I meant to say

Gravatar Thnx for posting these songs!
I love this 'sample' idea in your posts alot!

On top of that, I especially enjoyed 'Les Fleur'.
I have the Charizma + PBW album on which 'Apple Juice Breaks' is featured,
'Power in Numbers' with 'Thin Line' by J5 and the 'Litmus Test' album by Cut Chemist, but I never realized 'Les Fleur' by Minnie Riperton was the original... woops!
This version of Ramsey Lewis is very good too.

A few years back, I saw the video clip of 4hero's cover of this song, but I never heard of them before. I loved the song but never saw it again after that and I didn't knew what it was called.
Now I know and it is wonderful!

This song gives me goose bumps every time!

cheers!

Gravatar Thanks for your comments.

Dan:

Thanks for checking out Ear Fuzz again. We are glad to have people such as you who enjoy what we do.

T: I'm not sure what you mean by the "Ann Coulter" link. If you are referring to one of the tracks I posted, I downloaded all of them to test them out. I didn't see a link for Ann Coulter.

Jaz: Yeah, Three Dog Night has been sampled quite a lot. It's really interesting to discover the original samples from a hip-hop record are often taken from rock bands like Mountain "Long Red" which has been sampled on countless hip-hop records and the Eagles "The Long Run" which was used on Beastie Boys "High Plains Drifter". Thanks for checking us out and keep comign back.

Simon: I'm glad you like the sample idea. I've been thinking about doing this for awhile, but just had the inspiration the other day. The Minnie Ripperton version was not the original as far as I can tell. I didn't have the original "Les fleur" by Ramsey Lewis, so I downloaded this track in it's place. I will look for the original Ramsy Lewis version and try to correct this.

If you are interested, I run a blog called Eclectic Grooves with a lot of funk, free jazz, experimental, etc. Check it out at http://eclectic-grooves.blogspot.com

Thanks, Kevin

Gravatar "I hope you enjoyed this journey into the mind of a DJ."

More like the mind of a producer, no?

And who did produce this track?

Gravatar I uploaded the actual version of Les Fleur by Ramsey Lewis that was sampled by Black Sheep. It appears that the version I had up was very similar, but it had been remixed and about a minute of the song was cut. Sorry for the confusion, and thanks again for stopping by.

Best, Kevin

Gravatar Great post Kevin.

Interesting note: the Jefferson Airplane track "Today" became a standard cover song during the late 60's, and the version recorded by Tom Scott and the California Dreamers in 1967 contains the saxophone line sampled by Pete Rock for "They Reminisce About You." Funny how its all related.

Gravatar I always love it when you post a hip-hop song with the sample sources!

Gravatar The Chelsea Clinton clue was not intended for the 1992 election.
I'd like to remind you how the Clinton legacy allowed for the justification of tatooes and herion of the last revelry cycle. His "gays in the military" issue illustrates his acceptance of indecent liberalism.

Maureen is fucked up because she is disfavored and she had no empathy for the disfavored WHO HAPPENED TO BE HER CHILDREN!!!
Al Davis is fucked up because he is disfavored and had no empathy for the disfavored, which is why we had the 70s Raiders, preditory on the blue collar demographic during the 70s revelry cycle.
Expect the bi-racial Osama Mobarack to have a similar fate in store:::Deal with record company executive was a clue he doesn't care about black people, just as Guliani speaking of 911 is a clue he, like Italians, exploits and capializes off other people's misery. The good candidate is McCain, and they're burying him.

The difference may lie if he becomes president, for then it may not be positionable. Of course it may not be something we will be prevy to because of it. "There's something wrong with the way he looks." They say I am delivering him the election because of the Chelsea 2008 clue which would be consistant with how the gods conduct themselves in the context of the Situation::::
She is a better choice than he is and the gods are forcing injury upon the disfavored because of my actions.

The sent the clue Bush was evil with his Texas Rangers ownership, illustrating he is preditory on white males too.
This preditation translated to Iraq because the Republicans are positioned to be against obscene, indencent sickness in art.
You're all war mongers because of Iraq, and it is going to cost us all. Because of the use of liberals, delivering us this fracturization of the disfavored, the gods feel justified in taxing all equally.

: . . who is more evil: Bush or Cheney? § < --- > 09/11 18:25
: . . : . . Bush. Cheney has developed empathy § < - > 09/11 18:42

People have called Bill Clinton everything in the book. "Chelsea is different." The choreographed media declared Chelsea "untouchable" because SHE REPRESENTS A CLUE and they want it overlooked.

"What about (Amy Carter)?" What about her?
The way they dumped a shitty economy on his adminstration says disfavored. He's being punished for something.
The way they continually dumped on Carter in their media was similar to how they continually dumped on the French. And Barry Manilow. There may be a comparison here.
There was no future for Carter once voted out. Hillary is very much a viable candidate.

Was Apple positioned as corrupted by them? Was the iPod in full swing??

Gravatar seems The Nothing uses a speeded up version of "You Know, You Know" as the intro to his song "The Crumbling."

Hopefully this link will work so you can take a listen, and let us know what you think!

Thanks,
G

Gravatar The 'Today' intro by Jefferson Airplane indeed delivers the intro to 'Similak Child' from Black Sheep.

Since Tom Scott also recorded 'Today' with an almost similar intro, I recommend everybody to pick up the full album I posted on my blog, since Tom Scott's 'Today' also contains nearly all the music and world famous sax loop used by Pete Rock & CL Smooth's 'Reminisce over You'.

This little sample exposé is brilliant, by the way. It'll make the youngsters familiar with the good stuff from back in the days!

Gravatar great post... i knew two of these samples, but not the other two. nice!
