Thanks for the retrospective. I agree especially on the importance of
Helsinki -- something to put on the other side of the ledger from the pathetic WIN ("whip inflation now") buttons. Not under the category of Ford's legacy but as recollection of the period, I would add two other notes: 1)Against the backdrop of the ongoing oil/energy "crisis," Kissinger, when Ford's sec of state, made some (fairly minor) concessionary moves to the South (G77) in the North-South "dialogue," helping to lead to the 7th special session of the UNGen.Assembly in Sept.75, which issued the Declaration and Action Program on a New Int'l Economic Order; 2)Ford was in office when the Vietnam War finally ended (not that I suggest rehashing that here).
