Gravatar I haven't read much lit on presidential rhetoric, but I came across this article while doing a lit review on a different topic. The subject and results were interesting, so I kept it on file. Sorry I don't have more. Hope this helps. Good luck, by the way.

Young, Garry, and William Perkins. (2005). Presidential Rhetoric, the Public Agenda, and the End of Presidential Television's "Golden Age". The Journal of Politics, 67(4), 1190-1205.

Gravatar This is not my subject (or anywhere close to it), but I have a feeling there's a big literature on presidential rhetoric and its effects, so big that you could probably find recent review articles or handbook/encyclopedia-type articles that summarize a lot of it. The only possibly relevant name here that immediately comes to my mind is Kathleen Hall Jamieson. (Also, I think Jerel Rosati may have written about pres rhetoric and foreign policy. Could be wrong.) Two other suggestions: one or two of the intro IR texts on the market have good bibliographical footnotes that might lead you into some of the literature. (I won't mention particular textbooks here but I think you can track em down.) Also, picking up something short and affordable like Thomas Mann's 'Oxford Guide to Library Research' (Oxford UP, 1998, and maybe subsequent editions) might actually be a real time-saver in the long run. Good luck.

Gravatar Dan Z & LC:

Thank you both for the suggestions. I have found a few things already, but figured I'd put the question out there in case there were a few people working in this field that could save me some time. My dissertation is likely changing direction and this literature will be helpful. Diana Mutz and Jamieson are both at Penn with joint appointments in Annenberg and Poli Sci and I have their work. If you've got additional suggestions feel free to fire away!

Gravatar Bill,

Check out the footnotes of the recent Security Studies article by Krebs and Lobasz.

Gravatar The indexes and notes to Jeff Tulis's The Rhetorical Presidency and Kernell's Going Public should get you moving in the right direction. good luck.

Gravatar There are numerous works that respond to or advance the ideas elaborated by Tulis. I would recommend the following books (besides Tulis's book):

"Beyond the Rhetorical Presidency" edited by Martin Medhurst

- "Deeds done in words" by Kathleen Kohrs Campbell Jamieson and K.H. Jamieson.

- "The Presidency and the Rhetoric of Foreign Crisis" by Denise Bostdorff

- Maybe even "Presidential Crisis Rhetoric and the Press in the Post-Cold War World" by Jim Kuypers.

If you're running an online search, any article by Martin Medhurst, David Zarefsky, or Robert Ivie is a safe bet.

Hope that helps!

Gravatar Ran across by chance:
Colleen Shogan, 'The Moral Rhetoric of American Presidents' (reviewed in Perspectives on Politics, Dec. '07)

Gravatar You might check with my former fellow graduate student David Karol, now at Cal. Smart guy, well-read.
