I am still waiting for PTJ to take on this phenomenon with a bit of Weber, charismatic leadership, and its problems.
Surely I can't be the only one who things that this is now over the top. This isn't about the second coming of the Messiah, this is about electing a chief of the executive of a allegedly secular political system.
Does anybody actually expect Obama to fulfil all these expectations? Won't the disappointment be even harsher?
a.behnke raises some issues that could elicit a real response; however, not being PTJ, and not wanting to disappoint with an insufficiently nuanced response, i won't say much...except that when you get Ted Kennedy in full voice plus Caroline Kennedy in a not-all-that-huge space packed to the rafters basically anointing Obama with the mantle of JFK, things are going to get a little out of hand (no i wasn't there, but i saw the clips on the news).
also, you have to take account of the quite substantial symbolic significance of the possible election of the first african-american president; in the context of US history etc, this is a big symbolic deal -- a totally obvious point, but it perhaps bears on what a.behnke apparently perceives as a quasi-religious fervor among certain of his (Obama's) supporters.
