I wonder if you're familiar with Raymond Smullyan's puzzles? They might be right up your alley, especially To Mock a Mockingbird.

I like the phrase "there is no property at all that lets you distinguish between two equal values." I'm always looking for ways to present the basics to my algebra students. I'd like to be able to show how the rules of algebra fit in the big picture, to show how those rules are used, and to explain as much as I can in standard conversational English.
