What in the world does that mean?
NOTR, I think what that statement means is the ruinous policies of Jimmy Carter and his NSA Brezsinski who had put all his faith in the "utility" of extremist islamism to contain the spread of Communism, especially in the coveted oil fields of ME.
It is indeed food for thought the juxtaposition of Pope John Paul II, the first Polish Pope ever and the first non-Italian one in Centuries, at the height of solidarity movement of Poland in 1978, both of which was staunchly and nobly supported by Carter and his Polish NSA which brought freedom at last to Poland, as against the dismantling of the 2500 year foundation of monarchy of Persia/Iran (which had kept the clergy at bay), and the installation of the first "Persian" Pope, Khomeini, in 1979 a few months after the infamous Gualeloupe summit of the G4 - Carter calling the turbaned islamist a man he could "do business with" as he was just like himself, a man of "God" and "virtue"! Those events of course were quickly overtaken by the invasion of Afghanistan by USSR and the beginning of USA support of islamist Mojahedin there. The "green belt" - meaning radical islamism - which Brezsinski had placed all his faith in as a tool of containment of his number one nemesis is what today has become the noose that is around all of our necks.
