"...we part with tender relations stretching far behind us, that never can be exactly renewed..."

Gravatar thanks for this post! i've always wondered about meme

Gravatar You're welcome.

Gravatar I actually was quite happy to see your post. I had been "tagged" a couple of days ago and one of my thoughts was...hmmm what exactly is a meme? I wish this had been posted a few days ago.

Gravatar Yep...I first ran accross it at a conference about using computers in education, back about 1990.

It's grown as an idea. Now it tends to mean what's popular today on the net, or sometimes, it's an idea that a subgroup of net users (frequently with political agendas, but not always) want to push out into the public conscience, or sometimes, its a synonym for idea or activity.

The meme concept is a kind of interesting model of discussing how things reach tipping points and become ideas whose time has come...but the latest use as "thought I want to become influential, so I'm calling it a meme" I am not as sure about!

Gravatar Meme defined in terms as a "thought I want to become influential" is perhaps why I find the "meme batons" and everything else labeled as "memes" so repugnant. Thanks for reading my post and responding.

Gravatar You've raised some interesting points which I think are quite diverse as a result of us not having a simple pigeon hole for these blogging activities called Memes.

I think that just because something hasn't a proper name-tag shouldn't preclude it from being worthwhile, but I would hesitate at conferring any great cultural significance to these little blogging activities.

Unless we are all talking at cross purposes!

Gravatar Yes, indeed. Thanks again.
