"...we part with tender relations stretching far behind us, that never can be exactly renewed..."

Gravatar While I don't agree with your politics, I do think that you write with good will and from what in your opinion is best, so I still want to say hello. During the past few days I have wandered through and found myself unable to comment on the post below, but now that is out of the way I am relieved. Hope you have a wonderful stroll.

Gravatar Hey, JC

I think I was trying to arrive at an understanding of why I felt so opposed to Sheenhan's protest and to the groups that feel compelled to support her rather than offer a generalized or specific political view. My reaction really didn't have anything to do with whether I consider myself a liberal or democrat, conservative or republican. In that sense there are plenty of voices arguing from both sides of the pot without having to add to the stew. Instead I was trying to articulate why I felt her behavior--not her character or political views--was so repugnant and demoralizing to our fight against those who are committed to destroying our way of life. The Islamic extremists are not going to go away by pulling out of the middle east. The difference between now and the Vietnam era was that Vietnam never felt like a specific threat to our homeland. The terrorists with their destruction of the World Trade Center, however, has not only made that threat very specific but also very real. Anyway, I hope I haven't insulted your sensibilities with my response. I appreciate your readership and the time you take to respond by commenting. Thanks again,

Scot

Beutifully said. Strolls are difficult here in Kansas this time of year. It's either a hundred and five or we're getting a thrunderstorm.

I remember my many trips to Maine while I was with FedEx. I miss the clam shacks and the salt air.

Agin, beautifully said and written. E.B.White would be proud.

Gravatar Thanks Scot, for the clarity, thought, and thoughtfulness in your writing. The further I read the more comfortable I became easing myself into your day. Enjoy the walk. Hope it gives you what your writing gave me.

Smiles,
me-Liz

Gravatar Thanks, Phil.
Appreciate you checking in and for your kind compliment. I remember August in Kansas as being perniciously hot and rumbling with thunder. One day while strolling along the banks of the Arkansas, I found a willow tree to sit under. It became a favorite spot to work on my studies--certainly a welcome relief from the confines of my studio apartment that felt more like a poor man's sauna.

I haven't found that willow tree yet, but after vreakfast this morning I'm just going to sit with my wife on our back porch and watch the butterfly bush just beyond our reach. The monarchs are out in force right now and she says that they're a sight to behold.

After reading your essay I wrote a stream of concsiousness piece on my blog yesterday afternoon. It really helped. Thanks for being such a thoughtful catalyst.

Gravatar You're welcome, Phil. Appreciate your readership.
