"...we part with tender relations stretching far behind us, that never can be exactly renewed..."

Gravatar Wishing your son every blessing.

Gravatar Thank you, Patry.

Gravatar Scot

I echo patry's thoughts. May God be with your son and all who serve.

As I read the images of my days in boot camp forty some odd years ago raced through my mind. The lessons of duty and honor have never left me.

Like you, I wish the world were otherwise, but it isn't. We've had this awful shift and now duty and honor demand that we hold fast until the victory is won. The alternative course would be dishonorable and the result of taking it unthinkable.

If the time ever came I would consider it a great honor to serve alonside you and your son.

Gravatar Scot,

May God be with your son...and with YOU. Sometimes it's harder on the one at home who is left waiting for their loved one to come back again.

I noticed in your bio that you graduated from WSU. My brother will turn 52 in a couple of weeks and also graduated from WSU, a music major. I still reside in Kansas, where I've lived my entire life.

I look forward to reading more of your words...

Gravatar Phil:
Appreciate the sentiment. Your friendship and commentary is both valued and welcomed.
Scot

Gravatar Lori:
Thank you for stopping by to visit. Your kind words are appreciated. Kansas is a beautiful state, and I enjoyed the time that I lived there. Hope to see you visit again.

Gravatar Powerful stuff, Scot. And remember that your keyboard is now the rifle that you hold in your hands, a weapon for the less visible war that takes place in your homeland right now, where the battle is with words and the strongpoints hearts and minds. You're still a sharpshooter...

Gravatar Clive:
That's quite an analogy. I hadn't thought of the keyboard in that way. I'm not sure what this time we live in means, but with the squabbling going on with our political leaders, I don't think they do either. It's hard to be optimistic when you feel something incredibly large looming over you. Thank you for sharing your perspective,
Scot

Gravatar I just wanted to let you know how much my family and I appreciate your son and his peers right now. As for the political squabbling, it's made me uneasy for a long time. There used to be a saying: United we stand, divided we fall.

Gravatar Deborah,
It is good to have you come by. Thank you for reading, and for commenting. My hope is that a consensus can be reached by our political leaders so that we can remain united, otherwise we run the risk of vacilating in what our country's position is in response to the terrorists who are intent in usurping our way of life.
Scot

Gravatar Scot,
I didn't stay away because of the story. I wanted to be fully awake when I read it--for all of the reasons above this comment.

It heartens me to hear your writing voice, the same one that I first discovered speak softly on this topic. I can hear its tenor and its timbre and the thought that went in every word. Unlike other works these thoughts weren't finding words for precise articulation, these thoughts were letting memories supply the words.

There is an ease with which you tell your part of this story that shows it's as much a part of you as walking with your grandma was. The joy, the pride you transmit in speaking of your son is palpable. He must be an amazing young man.

Most of all what comes through is the depth and breadth of your character and it comes through because of how well your play your instrument. You should send this one to NPR to their morning essay "I Believe."

Thank you for letting me be

not the only one who thinks values are important.

Gravatar I hope that your son gets to serve our country almost anywhere but there, and can't begin to imagine what you're feeling

To love this country, I think, means sometimes to disagree with it leaders, but to always love put the interests of its people first

Gravatar Liz,
I appreciate that you take the time to read my work, but more than that, I appreciate the time you take to let me know how you respond to my work as well. And it doesn't matter when you check in, because I know that you will, and that when you do, you will make me all the better for it.
Thank you for the compliment and the suggestion,
Scot

Gravatar Pia,
Thanks for coming by. What you say is true, that is our love of country should not prevent us from disagreeing with our political leaders when necessary. Healthy debate and dissent is always good. But when we become mottled and confused in the face of the enemy, our dissent can sometimes become our weakness.
Scot

Gravatar Thank you for reminding me that the threat is real, even if I believe we have mishandled things so far.

It is men like you and your son, who are deeply good, who have helped build our country's strength.

I wish your son the best.

David

Gravatar Please thank you son for his willingness to take up arms to preserve our nation.

Gravatar David,
Thank you for that. Your visits and comments are always appreciated. Best wishes to you on this day we give thanks to our friends and family, and for the things in life we are grateful for.
Scot

Gravatar Hank,
You're welcome. Thanks for stopping by to read and for your comment.
Scot

Gravatar Scott,
Your thoughts, your writing, your friendship, the values you hold and have given your son--all of these I'm thankful for.

Gravatar Liz,
Thank you for that. Strange weather here today. Snow during the morning, then a thunderstorm. Happy Thanksgiving,
Scot
