It sounds altogether satisfying to have made the choice to move. Keep telling us how it goes.

Thanks, Lorna. I'll do just that. Actually, I've been quite energized since I've made my decision. It's kind of strange in a way, but I actually see myself there already.

New England to Texas, eh? That's quite a change of scenery, but I'm sure you'll find a way to make it home.

I just saw something online today about the 5 smartest cities to live in based on affordable housing, job opportunities and culture and Austin, Texas was #5. I don't know where you are headed but I'm sure you will do fine. At least i won't have to say I'll miss you as you'll still be here in the blogosphere.
Best of luck with your move.

Oh Scot,
You bring such a humanity to the story of saying good-bye to a home. The reality of the affordability and the detail of your student that you can hardly remember--I have too many of those myself. The bed, the bed that is the SAME ONE THAT IS IN MY SON'S BEDROOM, how could that not touch me?
I've reached the same place. I don't need what I don't need anymore. In some ways that's a good feeling. In some ways, it feels like resignation. My son would probably say it's sad. I think it's kind of freeing.
I've lived in Austin. Do consider it. It's beautiful. It's nothing like what folks think of as Texas. It's hill country--trees and green. I have a post on my blog http://lettingmebe.blogspot.com/...rning-
mist.html
about it.
I so miss the skies there. In fact, I'm going to write about them tomorrow. There are no skies like those in Austin. Three weather fronts come together. They're amazing.
Toadmaster is from Texas Hill Country. So are Texas Bluebonnets.

rdl,
Texas, espcially Houston, Austin and San Antonio, has nice demographics. Good paying jobs and affortable housing to start with, but the opportunites for an educator and writer seem endless. It's going to be interesting to see what direction I end going in next.

Liz,
Yes, in a strange way it feels liberating to get rid of things. I'd like to get to a point where the only things I have are what I absolutely need, to get to a point where I'm down to a laptop, a few good books, and my clothes. Though I doubt I'll ever pare down that much, I've certainly made a good start with getting rid of everything that I won't use. If I don't need it now, I certainly won't need it later.
Texas is going to be an adventure. To take on a young man's dream at my age may seem foolish to some, but I see it as an opportunity to realize a few of my biggest goals. Appreciate your support and encouragement, and for sharing your perspective.

That was great to read, thanks you! I'm now homesick for a New England Spring time. We're getting a bit of it here (Edinburgh, Scotland) too, the unfurling - it's amazing to watch when you actually have the time to.
I've always had a dream of retiring back to Maine, but I have wanderlust and may never find the right place to settle - wouldn't that be marvelous!
I'm going to have fun tripping through your blogroll for a bit - nice to meet you!

Lyvvie,
Nice to meet you, too. My grandparents immigrated to the United States from St. Andrews, which is close by to where you are. I've never had the opportunity to visit Scotland, but I certainly plan on doing so before my expiration date is up. Thank you for visiting, and for your kind response.

Good luck with your move. I ran into an old student of mine a few months ago too. He was very respectable looking and some kind of manager at Target. He was kind of spectacularly awful -- I had always thought he would either be a senator or in jail. I guess he found a middle road there.
