The use of Handcam shots (known to Jon as Jigglecam) has actually become less prominent after the big postmodern boom and bust (1999) The problem with the fight scenes in the bourne supremacy is that the editing was done by a crack adict (read: a normal editor) who apperantly believed no shot should last longer then 1/3 of a second. Crazy bastard ruined otherwise good choreography.

jon.
the reason action is shot like that is because it doesn't actually look very good or very exciting when shot straight-on with enough time for you to see it.
i ran into this while trying to shoot a slasher movie. it just doesn't work if you let the audience see everything.

I offer as counterexample every kung fu movie ever made. I could watch just Jackie Chan movies every day until I die and be happy. Maybe it's a taste thing, I 'unno. Just from an action-scene standpoint, I feel like the only worthwhile things to come out in the past few years were the Matrix movies and Crouching Tiger. Yuen Woo-Ping should be the wealthiest man alive.

no no no, the editor/DP/director went for a high concept feel, he felt that if he cut the shots fast that you would get the feeling of things being very fast. unfortunately the editor simply cut things toos hort and you couldnt see what was happening, I woulda fired his ass in a minute for editing like that.

the bourne supremacy was one of the worst movies ive ever seen. so bad, in fact, i stopped paying attentnion at the end and instead counted the number of cuts in a minute during the chase scene. there were something like 50 cuts in under 60 seconds.
thats enough to make us all epileptic.

Oy gevalt, that damn car chase.
I've never even seen Bullitt, but I am willing to accept as gospel that it has the best car chase(s) ever done in movies aside from Ronin.

the french connection also had a boss car chase. and we musn't forget the blues brothers.
ps. Jon - "jigglecam" was a term coined in the 90's to describe the slow-mo breast-bouncing shots of "baywatch". I like your usage better, but alas, there we are.
