Jon, it sounds like a moisture problem with your CD player. Condenstation gets into the device and on the lens and causes distorition or non-reading until it burns off. Might be repairable.
The thing also skips like a motherfucker and I'm hearing that modern mp3 stereos now have mid-track resume, which would be kind of nice to have, I'm not going to lie to you.
