I think 9pm is safe...maybe go over and ask? Or, tell them if it's loud enough to bother them to let you know..and adjust accordingly. ( By the way...goddamn you're thoughtful!)

Hahaha. For me whenever I go back home I play the electric full blast, much to the chagrin of my neighbors. If you're playing acoustic, it should be okay though. No one complains (much) at my dorm.

my friend puts his 3 year old son to bed around 8, but it appears that the kid just is ready to go to sleep then, so i'm not sure if that's actually a hard and fast bedtime. the kid also wakes up around 5 am and tells his parents "it's waking outside!" and makes them get up. so who knows.
can i just digress and say that despite the fact that i am not a small child, i would appreciate it if my upstairs neighbor had a cut-off time of 10 pm? he has recently taken up the guitar (which i don't like in the first place, but can tolerate if it's done well), only he can't actually play it yet, and he sings along despite not being a good singer either, and on top of it he plays music i don't like. did i mention he does this around 11:30 every night? yes. no wonder i have nightmares.

I think 9pm is safe. It mostly depends on when they wake up, usually youngish children get about 8 and a half hours of sleep a night? I think?? So if he wakes up at 6 AM, then he goes to bed at 9:30, which was my bedtime for, like, ever.

Have two kids, 9 and 6, here.
If there was a neighbor who played and sang until 9 I would have no problem with that.
Younger kids go to bed between 8 and 9, but I would say you are golden till 9. And I would also say you are a very good neighbor.
P.S. Just a note about the amount of sleep kids get, most do require more than 8 1/2 hours. Kids here are in bed at about 8:30 or 9:00 PM and get up about 7 AM. When they are younger they need more than that.

Thanks for the info, people (you can keep going if you want). I just figure that it's a stupid man indeed who willingly makes an enemy of his neighbor.

i was wondering a similar thing, since our washing machine? when it's on the spin cycle? sounds like a HELICOPTER landing in the garage.
i will go with a 9pm cutoff as well.

9 is good. I have a six year old who sleeps 11 hours a night. Once they are asleep, they are ASLEEP. It's amazing. He's usually out like a light by 8:30.
I love the Dog Blog by the way. Why don't you put up a Pay Pal link now that the ads are gone? I'm sure people would pony up to keep it going. It's an addiction among my friends and I.

When I was little bedtime was at eight, and as a common courtesy thing nine or ten is a great cutoff. Also you could knock on their door and ask them about it--it would answer your question 100% accurately AND impress them with your coolness.
