The previous version had only one Fort, and the emphasis was more on defense vs. attack strategy. The new role makes two Forts mandatory and standardizes the flag capturing component. Also, the new version makes the Converter role optional, since it proved sort of clunky to implement but is still kind of a tantalizing idea, tactically speaking.
It can't be played in rain, but if it's cold enough for snow where you are, I bet that'd be excellent!
