i have no idea if this is even remotely similar to what you're experiencing, but i have this thing where i smell this pleasant smell and i think it's a phantom. random places/times: at the grocery store, in the car, walking down the street, and ESPECIALLY on my street when i first walk out of the house in the morning. it is a smell that is not dissimilar to a laundry-being-done sort of smell; it is alike in that it is sort of artificially-chemically-sweet-and-not-of-nature, but it's definitely not laundry. it lacks that chlorine-ey, this-is-what-clean-smells-like type of smell. uh, so basically, i fear my brain may be fabricating this smell. i wouldn't mind -- it's a pleasant enough smell -- except that it's massively creepy.

Yeah, that happens sometimes.

Olfactory hallucinations are real.

They're a kind of synasthaesia, where something is stimulating a your brain on a ton of levels (ie a good smell memory and the olfactory bulb) and your senses are duped into believing they're actaully sensing something.

I get it when I'm sick and feel like I'm breathing Windex.

I used to smell cheeseburgers *underwater* if I was hungry enough during swim practice.

Gravatar recently, in NYC, there have been a spate of widespread smell events -- these are not hallucinated, but definitely make everyone feel wierd. Since when does manhattan suddenly smell like maple brown sugar everywhere you go?

Also, strangeness -- the ads you comments are pulling up all have to do with wills and estate planning. does this mean im going to die?
