Gravatar It is better than "Awesome" I suppose.

Gravatar I have this problem, too! I'm at a loss for another phrase that I can use as a nicotine patch to wean myself off 'brilliant' (or worse, 'brill'); but my substitutes are always more off-color and inappropriate.

Also, that's Gold Bond* that you're on Google video with a cute girl.

*Brilliant substitute no. 429, meaning "ball-tinglingly awesome". It never caught on.

Gravatar Ha, sucker. My vernacular is slowly and silently slinking its way into your subconcious. I hope your subconcious doesn't mind.

I don't understand why that never caught on, I think I just might start using it myself!

Gravatar Is "brilliant" a particularly British word? I mean, other than when Paul Whitehouse says it.

I only ask because the commentator on Def Jam Vendetta: Fight For NY keeps saying it too, and I'm pretty sure he's Americanian.

Gravatar I've always associated it with you British folk, along with driving on the left, fish & chips, and calling soccer "football," even though I know that last one's a worldwide thing.

Gravatar You know a friend in my sculpture class and I use this too... I think it is because of that commecial, with the old black and white faces often commending eachothers ideas with the same exclamation.

Gravatar I know damned well that's not why I use it.

...Actually I have absolutely no idea why I use it. Ironically, everyone thinks I use it because of those stupid Guinness commercials.

Gravatar could be worse, actually. in college we went through a phrase of declaring everything "bril". *shudder*

Gravatar Could the "brilliant" exclamation be stemming from those Guinness commercials with the two inventors? One mentions a new invention and the other says, "BRILLIANT!" Eh?

Gravatar It's going around with the young hipsters...I have the same problem. Try it in rural Ohio and see what kind of looks you get.

I find that Merriam-webster online helps with the lexicon. Television does not.
