There was some meat left out on the counter, or meat juice, or something. Some sort of meat thing. Not me. The smell's gone now, so I don't care anymore!

Meat gets that rancid smell FAST - 12 hours tops. If you've got uncoocked chicken bones or strips of fat off a steak in the trash, that shit goes nuts on you faster than (insert overweight celebrity of the moment) at the Ponderosa buffet.
Word of caution - put raw meat refuse in a plastic shopping bag and take out to the big trash rather than just tossing it in the can. I caution because I love, and I've left meat in the can more times than I can count.
