Try rubbing a tiny dab of Vaseline on your nose instead; the smell is much less potent. Also your nose will be properly lubricated at all times.

I've heard KY Jelly works wonders for this problem. No joke. But if you do put KY Jelly on your nose, take pictures and make sure you get the bottle in the picture too. You know, for evidence...for this, uh, website: kyjellyreallydoesworkwondersonadrynose.com
Yeah, that's it.

Secret: when I was little, I loved the smell of original Chap Stick so much that I ate it. Tubes of it. I would hide under the dinner table while I snacked on petroleum products. Keep that nose away from me or I might get my old cravings again.

I believe eating chapstick is hardly an unknown phenomena.
I once put Carmex on the edges of my nostrils when I was stuffed up; it actually cleared me up and let me sleep. Later, I tried the same thing with Tiger Balm, with predictably hilarious (and agonizingly burning) results.

Are you using the regular black label chapstick?
I would go with a good moisturizer over chapstick, but if you must (I know I do occasionaly), the othe; flavors of chapstick smell better, and blistex has kind of a weird minty-ness.
mmm.
