I've frequently heard "eight glasses", with the caveat that "glass" here means something like an 8oz glass such as our forefathers used, and not a Big Gulp or something similar.

So, it seems entirely plausible that "ten glasses" could have been part of a real conversation... but it's hardly guaranteed.
