Go for the Amex card that has to be paid off every month, a charge card, not a credit card. That way you will actually monitor your expenses on that card knowing you MUST pay it off at the end of the month. This is so left brain speaking....
use the new card only for medical expenses.

Get a new card and only use it for gas. Small but steady purchases you pay off before the interest kicks in are good for you, I guess.
I have a need for a credit card for work expenses; but I am still slacking on getting one as I don't trust myself with it. Reimbursement checks always seem like FREE MONEY for some reason, even though they are not.
A debit/credit card works for me.
try to get a high limit on your card. it's the credit/debt ratio that makes you look good. you can see your credit score at freecreditreport.com it should show you on a scale so you can see what it low/average/high.
gas or groceries. or anything you buy regularly, really.
