I spread the pb first, for the same reason of contamination.

I always just, y'know...use two different utensils. Crazy talk I know, but then, I like to live on the edge.

I do jelly first with a final wipe on the soon-to-be peanut butter slice of bread. This properly cleans the knife to keep it good and clean.
This utensil might work too; it's even color coded:

I also do the jelly first, followed by wiping the knife clean on the other slice of bread. This is partly so that I can lick the excess peanut butter off the knife when I'm done making the sandwich.
Peanut butter damn it.

I think if I were to make such a sandwich, I would do the jelly first for that same reason. Much easier to clean the knife off with a quick wipe before digging into the PB.

You may be crazy, but not because of the PBJ cross-contamination issue. I have also struggled with this issue. I try to wipe the knife clean on the opposite bread first, but I do the peanut butter first because for some reason i'd rather have a trace of peanut butter in the jelly jar rather than a trace of jelly in the peanut butter jar. Maybe I'm the crazy one.

You're doing the PB&J all wrong! Here's how it's supposed to be:
You need:
2 slices of bread, perfectly soft
1 jar of jelly, jam, or preserves (your choice of flavor)
1 jar of creamy peanut butter (crazy people use crunchy)
1 butter knife for spreadin'
1.) Lay out bread slices next to each other.
2.) Take knife and insert into peanut butter jar. Spread a thin layer of peanut butter on each slice of bread. It is important to use only one side of the knife for this. When finished (peanut) buttering your bread, wipe used side of knife on inside and edge of peanut butter jar, cleaning it efficiently and clearly.
3.) Take knife and insert into jelly jar, using previously-unused side to "grab" jelly from jar. Glop jelly onto one slice of bread, spread slightly so that jelly reaches all sides of bread slice. The jelly here should not be spread thin as you would with the peanut butter, rather it should be glopped on in a bunch of globs, and the globs manipulated with the knife so that they merge together and form a slightly thinner mass. This ensures the perfect pb-to-j ratio.
4.) Put peanut butter-only slice of bread on top of other slice to form sandwich.
5.) Mmmmmmmmm.

PB on both slices of bread? This is madness.
Also, I toast my bread for PBJs. That's right, I said it!

I'd rather have PB in my J than J in my PB. PLus I feel like the PB hugs the knife and contaminates less than J. All of this is moot though because my lady's sister has allergies and the PB always needs to go second in order keep it out of the J.

i always do the jelly first, then lick the knife, then do the peanut butter. The jelly is easier to lick off, and spit is clear so nobody knows that i do this. I always do it when your back is turned.
