I microwave my wet dishrags and sponges for about 30 to 60 seconds to kill the bacteria that makes the nasty dishrag/sponge stench. Well, I don't know if it actually kills the bacteria, but at least it gets rid of the smell. Important: make sure the dishrag or sponge is wet! Learned that from Lifehacker.

This tastes gross but try gargling with warm salt water (about a half tsp. salt in a glass); it relieves the pain and can actually kill some of the bacteria too. Feel better.

Well, when it comes to sponges, 2 minutes are recommended. So...that's something.

uh, with a sore throat like that, you should check to see if you don't have strep throat or something.
but the gargling with hot water and salt that lee posted is a correct way to help with soreness. also hot brandy shot or any other hot liquor shot is good at killing those bacteria.

I learned that the sponge is supposed to be wet from watching /The Green Mile/.

Y'all need to get a quart of hot and sour soup and take a 1/2 to a full cup of it every hour or so. I swear your throat will feel better with this soup than with anything you can get at the drug store. Ginger ale - anything with ginger, anything spicy like curry or lentil chili.
And get your throat swabbed for strep.
