Gravatar wait until they unveil the Alphadelegates.

(the delegates that police the other delegates)

Gravatar Superdelegates are to Democractic Convention as Florida is to National Election. "Seriously? It comes down to THIS bullshit?"

Gravatar They've apparently been talking about superdelegates since at least 1988. I think SDs are sort of like the Electoral College: people forget how much they hate the institution for four years. Then comes the sweet, sweet hatred.

Apparently the violence of the 1968 Democratic convention led to a lot of changes in how they were run. Democratic leadership wanted to keep conventions very sedate affairs where nothing much actually happened, so as to prevent the dirty hippies from messing things up again. So says Joan Didion in a few places ("After Henry," "Political Fictions").

Gravatar Ok, I'm glad you posted that because I was not brave enough to admit I had no idea what a superdelegate was or to ask anyone about it.

What's so super about these delegates anyhow?

Gravatar "What's so super about these delegates anyhow?"

They're more or less all elected officials. Every Democratic member of Congress is an automatic superdelegate. But then, for instance, Joe Lieberman was disqualified -- is no longer Super -- because he endorsed McCain for president.

Gravatar Further proof that middle management is in the air, like penicillin spores, and will grow anywhere.

I'm also surprised that the superdelegates were a kind of open secret for so long. I guess it's a good sign, as it means that people give a fuck about the Dems this time around.
