Gravatar I really can't believe that think this is representative of liberals, of the Democratic party. Really.

Gravatar Hitchens is a fairly brilliant man - of the secular left. What I find most fascinating about his facile mind is his willingness to abandon defense of any position in his absolute pursuit of truth. You should read his entire column, and some of his other stuff.

Gravatar I'm a fan of his writing. But that doesn't mean I'm signing up to label every liberal or moderate Dem I know as a demagogue of political correctness, out to destroy every child's joy in the holidays, waiting for the day when all holidays are banned.

It's a far cry between wanting public space to be neutral in terms of religious symbolism out of respect for the pluralistic society this is and believing that personal and family celebrations of those traditional holidays will usher in a theocracy.

The ongoing generalization of the extreme statements and positions of some on the left to all of those on the left apparently is in full swing.

Gravatar The joy is to be private - behind closed doors, right? Pretty glum on the streets. No Christmas cheer, eh? No mention in public places.

Gravatar Nope. Feel free to go Christmas caroling or attend an easter parade. Business are free to put play religious music, public buildings can be decorated, churches can ring their bells. All I ask is that you refrain from asking government to sponsor religious events or serving as the repository of religious symbols. I don't want the town meeting opening with a prayer, I don't want my public park overrun with religious icons, I don't want government to be in the business or religion at all. Faith is institutionalized enough.
