DB: I left a comment to this effect on your blog 2 days ago, quoting the site that Shlomo's father was sitting shiva for him.

citing "the Talmudic Law of Moser that prohibits a Jew from informing on another Jew to a non-Jew"
Greeeeeaaat... so now everyone is going to think this oversimplification of "moser" is legitimate Jewish law. Way to further those conspiracy theories, guys.

Check VIN. The story about the rabbi sitting shiva is false.

Shlomo Dweck is no hero. I'm very glad that he exposed the sleazy criminals, but he's just another criminal who was out to save his own neck and cut a deal.

It is a theoretical shiva. As Dweck the younger enters the Witness Protection Program his previous identity has ceased to exist. hence he is "dead" to the world.
or it could be that now that he is impoverished for good that Dweck the elder is employing the same lomdus that I did to keep dear 'ol Uncle Jake breathing.

Though I confess to being unsure if I'd call him a hero. He did rat out Jews
What's wrong with ratting out Jews if they deserve to be ratted on?

I'm very glad that he exposed the sleazy criminals, but he's just another criminal who was out to save his own neck and cut a deal.
So why should he be treated any worse than the other criminals who stayed silent? That's what's frustrating to non-Orthos such as myself-- Dweck appears to be a putz, fair enough. But to ostracize him and only him makes it very clear that as far as the Orthodox (in these communities) are concerned, inappropriate, even criminal behavior is okey-dokey, but exposing it? No, that's beyond the pale. The unbridled Machiavellianism and self-centeredness masquerading as a religious value (bad for the community, bad for the Jews, chillul hashem, etc) is what rankles me. You know what's really bad for the Jews? Having criminals for rabbis, and then trying to justify a cover-up in the name of "not hurting" the community.
If people are going to sit shiva for Dweck, fine. But I want the next one to be for these so-called leaders. Why do I get the feeling the Messiah will show up before that happens? (This is all the more infuriating given that if any of them had married a Gentile, or even a convert, they'd be disowned on the spot. Again, what is the message being sent?)

Nothing. But from what I understand from E. Fink, it was Dwek that talked them into this criminal activity.
(ie. No Dwek working with feds to start everything, no criminal activity would have happened).

Had Dweck turned everyone in becuase he felt it was the right thing to do, he would be a hero. But he did it to save his own neck, which just makes him an opportunist.

Holy Hyrax:
Hold your holy horses.
I said that it has been alleged that Dwek talked them into criminal activity (by fairly credible sources.
Neither of us know the facts.

FY,
So why should he be treated any worse than the other criminals who stayed silent?
Who said he should be treated worse? All I said is that he's not a hero. You're using my comment as a springboard against those who are all wrapped up the idea that he's a "moser" and all that crap. That's fine, but my comment wasn't meant to indicate that I agree with that group in any way, shape, or form. I'm just disagreeing with DB's reference to him as a "hero" in the post.

Correction - DB said he's not a hero. It was others in this thread, or another thread, who were calling him one.

"so now everyone is going to think this oversimplification of "moser" is legitimate Jewish law. Way to further those conspiracy theories, guys."
Part of the cause of these problems are that people are worried about what others (both from within their social group and from without) are going to think. Stop giving a sh*t about what others think, and start doing what's right, period.

on 'moser' as panacea to pasqen death on everyone we may not agree with.
we have been repeating 3 times a day a curse on the mosrim over the last 2000 or so years.
maybe it's time to review the shmoneh esreh -18-.
(PS: of course birkat haminim is the 19th blessing!).
