How come the Yankees can't get like Carlos Gonzalez or Miguel Montero ?

This NYDailyNews article is Arizona Diamondback propaganda. Notice, in the first line, Bill Madden describes the source of this article as "sources close to the negotiations". He doesn't say "an unnamed Yankee official". Arizona's trying to influence the offer the Padres are making. They're trying to make it seem like Cashman will accept an offer of some run-of-the-mill pitching prospects. Arizona hopes that the Padres will see this and decide to stand pat with their offer of Linebrink and Kouzmanoff. The only way Arizona can beat that Padres off is if they offer one of Chad Tracy, Carlos Quentin or Connor Jackson. If Kevin Towers adds a prospect to the Linebrink+Kouzmanoff package, then the only way Arizona can outbid them is if they add in a prospect to go along with one of Tracy, Quentin or Connor Jackson.

Cashman won't flinch. He'll wait until one of these teams or BOTH meet his demands. And these are, as mentioned above:

From the Diamondbacks: Jackson/Tracy/Quentin + prospect

From the Padres: Linebrink/Kouzmanoff + prospect

Cashman can do the Padres deal right now if he wanted and it's much better than the offer of pitching prospects mentioned in this DailyNews article.

The deal is not close. The Padres are the frontrunner. The Diamonbacks are trying to sabotage the value of Johnson. Bill Madden and co. are desperate for a story obviously because the Yankee camp isn't talking right now. Show me an article where the source is a bonafide Yankee official claiming that Arizona is in the lead and I'll retract my statements.

What a waste of time.

PS

Loretta is a nice UT pickup. He can handle the bat and play all INF positions. Cairo's an automatic out.

Where Do yankees put these players if Cashman acquires them? Does cashman release Steven white or any other pitchers to make room in their roster?

If the Padres offer is Linebrink AND Kouzmanoff is a very good one, but I havenīt read this from a solid source. Iīd do that in a minute, but I guess it will take the Yankees to asume a huge part of the salary.

If Cashman gets 2 of those young arms and another low level prospect from Arizona, it would be great. I believed that Randy would get us something less than Sheff, but that package plus salary relief plus flexibility plus youth is great for the organization.

It sure would show Pat Gillik how to make salary-dump deals AND get value in return.

I'm not a big fan at all of Nippert. He may very well have been unlucky last year, but the guy was pitching as a 25 year old at AAA. Obviously, if he's similar to Steven White, and the Yanks already have Steven White (along with Karstens and Rasner), trading for him would add nothing to the organization.

If the Yanks trade Unit for (more) pitching prospects, then I hope that Cashman uses a bit of that depth to get some hitters, or even hitting prospects. No selling the farm, but judicious use of it. Everybody wants pitching, after all.

Like many of you, I'd like to see the Yanks get a hitter/hitting prospect (or more) off of Arizona in a Unit deal, if only because the Diamondbacks seem to be very good at drafting/developing hitters, and not so good with pitchers.

Cashman would not be making such a trade unless he, in my opinion, has assurances that Clemens will be coming back to the Yanks in '07.

Based on what I have seen from Cashman in the last year plus, Cashman has been playing some pretty impressive hot stove league chess and is always thinking a few moves ahead of everyone else. I also think that he has made the prudent decisions when making deals and that giving up The Unit and thus relying exclusively on Igawa and Pavano to fill out the #4 and #5 slots is misreading his intentions.

I don't think Cashman is expecting anything from Pavano and is expecting little from Igawa as a starter. Therefore, I think trading The Unit is a first step in what he surely expects to be the Return Of Roger 2007. It might not happen in April or May, but then again we really don't need much of a #5 starter in the first 6 weeks or so.

Clemens in pinstripes is on the horizon, my friends. In fact, I think Cashman and Roger have already worked out the parameters of a one year deal.

Gravatar Why can't the Yankees get Miguel Montero? I don't know. The value is about the same. The Dbacks may not want to give up their catching depth though.

Yeah, I understand that these stories are very hard to comment on. You are right that this rumor could be 100% fabricated. That's why I resisted writing an article on the trade until now. Bonafide, named sources are rare in Sports journalism. However, remember back to the Gary Sheffield trade, where the name Humberto Sanchez came out in a similar fashion two days before the trade was made.

I think you are right about Cashman. He is a very good GM. However, Byrnes is a very good GM too. I wouldn't count on him making a Jose Vidro trade.

Conor Jackson would be an absolute steal. The guy is a .330/.430/.550 hitter in hte minors. He plays a good 1st base. He's a right handed hitter. If I were Cashman, I'd offer Johnson and Clippard for Jackson. I'm just not sure that Byrnes wants to trade either Jackson or Tracy. He might have enough outfielders in the system to consider trading Quentin.

In regards to the Padres, I'm not sure that they are the stronger team. Kouzmanoff is damn good, and would be an excellent piece to our offense. I would love a Linebrink as well. But the Padres don't have the kind of depth to offer us the bank. I hope that they do, but I can't really see it. It would be interesting though to see them trade for Randy and sign Wells. Maddux + Wells + Randy... the AARP rotation.

Gravatar NO DEAL UNLESS WE GET RYAN DOHERTY !! Thats as per me!! The only way to replace 6'-11" is with 7'-2". Ryan is the deal breaker!!

Gravatar Wow. That is a big boy.

Gravatar MLBTradeRumors is reporting the DBacks and Yanks are close. They are also reporting that Mientkiewicz and Loretta are close to signing with NY. Both Mientkiewicz and Loretta would be great to have on the bench. Mientkiewicz will probably battle it out with Phillips. Hopefully Philips gets the job at 1B as that would get another righty in the lineup.

The way it's looking the Yankees will have a sick bench. Mientkiewics and Phillips will be able to swap between Cano and Phillips for AB advantage.

The Yankees are also reportedly looking heavily at Villone and Schoenweis. I'd like to see Schoenweis as a Yankee. If Schoenweis is signed I highly doubt Gonzo AND Linebrink will be Yankees.

I'd love to see Schoenweis, Gonzo, AND Myers in the 'pen. That'd eliminate Ortiz almost completely. Then there's also Hafner and Thome who'd be eliminated as well.

I say sign Schoeneweis, trade RJ for Conor Jackson, sign Loretta, and trade for Gonzalez.

Imagine having a lineup like this:

Damon
Jeter
Abreu
Giambi
AROD
Matsui
Posada
Cano
Jackson

And then a pen like this:

Rivera
Farnsworth
Gonzalez
Bruney
Myers
Schoenweis
Proctor
Britton

That's be 6 inning games for us.

Gravatar Thats a 13 man pitching staff. You'd have a bench of Loretta, Catcher, Cabrera. Won't work.

Honestly, I really don't want either lefty. They both suck. I'll take a good righty in the pen over a mediocre lefty any day. I'd rather put a real pitcher up against Ortiz or Hafner or Thome than some 5.00 ERA lefty.

It's a bad trap to get in to. Already we have Myers who is useful only for his very limited role. Gonzalez is special because he's so damn good against both lefties and righties.

Gravatar The Padres offer of Linebriker for Randy got me thinking, Why does Cashman wants ANOTHER ML RH RELIEVER??? We have tons of those. The only logic is a trade later to get Gonzo, giving Proctor or even Linebriker.

The trade with Arizona for MORE YOUNG RH STARTERS looks better in the way that you can never have enough pitching, and will give the organization the depth to trade some of them or try them until some of them succeed. Looks like he learned the lesson of not going after FA pitchers and instead growing your own, and heīs following the recipe to the extreme.

Gravatar You're all forgetting something, Cashman's rumored asking price of:

One prospect PLUS one of either Connor Jackson, Chad Tracy or Carlos Quentin.

Don't let these "sources close to the negotiations" distract you from Cashman's vision. Don't believe anything you read in the papers from any source not officially affiliated with the Yankees. When the papers quote a Yankee source, then I would take it seriously. Until then, it's all spin.

Randy Johnson is a surefire number 3 starter in the NL. He'll attract major revenue for either the Diamondbacks (especially the D-backs) or the Padres. The NL West is a wide open division. The addition of a mid-rotation starter can mean the difference between one of the teams making or missing the postseason. If the Padres land Johnson, they improve and they keep him from the Diamondbacks and vice versa. There's a bidding war right now.

What's Johnson worth? See Cashman's rumored asking price above.

The Arizona GM doesn't meet the asking price of one of Connor Jackson, Chad Tracy or Carlos Quentin PLUS one prospect added, then Cashman will take the higher offer from San Diego. If Johnson goes to San Diego then you just conceded the division to them. They'll have a front-end trio of Peavy, Young and RJ, followed by Maddux and Hensley.

Not only that, you'll lose millions in revenue from attendance as Johnson chases the historic 300 win mark. Your seats will remain empty and you will have no reason to cheer. All because you're afraid to trade Chad Tracy and a prospect.

I hear San Diego just upped their offer (rumored to be Kouzmanoff and Linebrink). Cashman was rumored to be wanting a prospect along with them and I think San Diego just met that demand.

Now it's up to the Diamonbacks to add a prospect to one of Jackson/Tracy/Quentin.

Last I heard, the D-backs are having difficulty extending Johnson so they withdrew their initial offer which granted them a 72 hour negotiation window with RJ's agent.

Ante up or you lose.

Gravatar If Cash can't get Jackson or Montero then perhaps it is time to consider other trades. Kouzmanoff, Linebrink + sounds good and we can spin Linebrink for propects. All I am saying is that we have two very deep areas right now. Right handed pitchers and right handed relievers.

Karstens
Rasner
White
Sanchez
Hughes
Clippard

These are all RHP and all are close ,if not, major league ready. Adding Owens, Nippert, or Ohlendorf is just piling on. Morever we have no place to put them, as the AAA rotation is set. Do you release White and Rarstens to make room?

Britton
Bean
Beam
Veras
Cox
Whelan
Patterson
Clagget

These are all relievers who project to make the Majors. We have depth in these areas, we don't need to trade to add to these areas. Focus on C and IF. If however Cash can spin say White and Nippert for hitting prospects more power to him.

In addition Loretta will be our best utility man in years.

Gravatar Have you heard from BA that they now rank Yankee system 6th overall? Thatīs something, considering what the said few years ago.

Gravatar The D-Backs, according to KNBR in San Francisco, will not trade Conor Jackson, Chad Tracy, or Carlos Quentin; nor will they part with 3 pitching prospects. If a deal is made, the most the Yanks would be getting back is Dustin Nippert and Micah Owings; possibly Jose Vizcaino as a “throw in”.

Gravatar Q: Ben from New York, NY asks:
John, Thanks for all the great work. No Jesus Montero? Is he #11? This group looks a lot more impressive than any top 10 the Yankees have had in quite some time--what's your assesment?

A: John Manuel: No on Montero. The jury was always still out on him catching, and several scouts I talked to when he signed in July thought he was a 1B. Then if he's a 1B and not a C, all the value will be in the bat, and you're projecting a 16-year-old's bat. Add to that he's got 80 raw power, yes, and they spent a lot of money, but the Yankees also removed the man (Lin Garrett) who oversaw his signing, and every report I've heard on Montero's performance at the Yankees' mini-camp (which functions as their instructional league team) has been negative. There's no guarantee that Montero even makes the top 30, frankly. All the news and rumors I've heard about him since signing are the opposite of positive, to put it politely.

Gravatar Yeah Chofo, I saw the 6th overall rating. BA's only complaint about the Yankee farm system is a legit one - too much emphasis on right handed pitchers with little depth at Catcher, Shortstop 2nd Base, or Lefty pitching.

Gravatar No, I don't release anyone in the AAA rotation. I simply start Rasner as the Yankee's longman.

Gravatar BamBam, I'm not sure that Johnson has the type of value that you are expecting. He's not going to make or break a team's bottom line when he chases 300 wins, and he's not going to single handedly bring a team to the playoffs. But he could put the Dbacks or Padres over the top of their suddenly competitive division.

Gravatar Anychance Yankeesdraft Rick Porcello in next year draft? thanks

He's being comparred to Justin Verlander and can throw 98 mph.

Gravatar I'd be shocked if he was available at 30. I also have heard that he throws more like 94-95 than 97+.

Gravatar I want Cashman to trade Rj to the Padres and get Arizona back for screwing us with Schilling.

The same management that supposidly screwed us with Schilling is no longer running the show. In fact, rumor is that Colangelo was fired BECAUSE he gave up Schilling for a bag of balls, and put screwing the Yankees ahead of his team's best interest

Gravatar I donīt expect Randy to bring back a better package than Sheff did, thatīs 3 young arms, one ML ready and two from the low minors.

I donīt see Arizona giving back a top hitting prospect for a 43 year old with injury issues. Is too much. Iīd love to have Connor Jackson, but it will take a lot more to do that deal

QUOTE
Big wish: Yankees, D'backs near Johnson trade
Saturday, December 30, 2006
BY DAN GRAZIANO
Star-Ledger Staff
Randy Johnson's brief stay in New York could end as soon as today.

A baseball official who spoke with one of the teams involved yesterday said a trade that would send Johnson from the Yankees back to the Arizona Diamondbacks was nearing its completion. While several complicated details remained to be worked out -- mostly involving deferred money owed to Johnson by the Diamondbacks -- the official said those issues could be worked out by today and a deal could be done soon.

Cashman stay away from Medders. He's has past of injuries on his shoulder.

http://www2.sportsnet.ca/ basebal...Brandon_Medders

Gravatar Wang's weakness as pitcher doesn't have strikeout pitch and needs to developed a secondary pitch along with his great sinker. Great Hitters will adjust to Wang's sinker and He will be out of baseball if he can't developed some kind of new pitch.

Gravatar DNJ,
Where would you rank Humberto Sanchez and Clippard betweeen this 3 pitchers offered by Arizona, and the prospects the White Sox got in both their trades with Phillis and Rangers and the ones Houston gave to Colorado?

Gravatar I'll give you two lists. My opinion and the consensus.

The consensus:

Hughes > Danks > Hirsh > Sanchez > Nippert > Owings > Ohlendorf > Clippard.

My opinion:

Hughes > Hirsh > Owings > Ohlendorf > Danks > Clippard > Sanchez (injury issues, not stuff) > Nippert

Gravatar Rolando Japa, Hey egan do you have scouting report on him? thanks

Gravatar He's on the list for me to do once I move over to the new site (which should be completed as soon as haloscan finishes their commenting aparatus for blogger beta, which could be today).

On the list are Erik Abreu, Rolando Japa, Andy Cannizaro, Kevin Thompson, and Reegie Corona.

Gravatar Thanks!
So getting Oweigs will give us a tremendous AAA rotatin ready to take over with Wang!

Gravatar I think that Owings would be the favorite to fill the 5th rotation spot if Pavano can't start the season under that situation. Of course, it depends how the Yankees want to play Karstens.

It'll be nice in 2 years or so when we have a surplus with major league experience, and we can trade away a few guys.
