I love your profiles but have to kill you on this one please please get your facts straight especially when throwing the word juiced around. He was suspended 50 games for takeing Aderal (legal prescription speed used for ADD kids) without a pre aproved prescription. He was worn down and tired from the many many college innings he had thrown this year and didn't think anything of takeing an upper he had used in college to keep him up to study it was NOT a steroid and did not imporve his performnance or stuff.

I was just wondering, is there a technical difference in describing a pitchers command v. his control? I figured they were pretty much interchangeable but I wanted to make sure. Thanks!

I'm not sure if you saw the game he pitched against rice this past season but I really like this kid's Mentality
But here's a Quote from his school newspaper during that year
"McCutchen is ultra competitive and is a real high energy [guy] on the mound with a good fastball and great curveball; that's his out pitch. Try and stay with him and battle pitch for pitch. He can get frustrated if you screw with his rhythm and step out. He wants to work fast, has got three good pitches and knows how to pitch. Do what you can to frustrate him and make sure you're ready to hit."

He was touching 96 during his short time in Charleston though.
More than likley he'll end up in the
bullpen.

Sorry Chris, but I hadn't read up on the updates since he was suspended. The word back then was that he was on steroids. I guess things have changed. Still, I would think that the league would overturn or allow an appeal for a prescibed amphetamine if he indeed was suspended over a technicality.
Reading over everything, it seems that the newspapers who reported steroids retracted. Oops.

Sean, Control and Command describe very different things.
Control = The ability to not walk people.
Command - The ability to spot a pitch.
It's possible to be "Wild within the strike zone" or having good control but poor command. Hitters with poor command tend to be prone to the home run.

Jim Callis from Baseball America was asked this question on his weekly Chat session.
Jack Bauer (unknown): What are your top ten farm systems?
Jim Callis: Fine question. My Top 10 in order is: Devil Rays, Rockies, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Angels, Yankees, Brewers, Royals (almost solely for the big three of Gordon, Hochevear, Butler), Tigers, Reds (again for the star power at the top).
Yankees have made great strides in the last year, they were rank in the bottom half last year and now he thinks they are in the Top Ten. I love the fact that the Yankees are putting more money into scouting and player developing. This is a good sign for the future!

I really appreciate your updates. However, if that's the case shouldn't you edit this update to at least prevent the casual reader from leaving here with an incorrect impression of McCutchen based on bad information?

You added what you did above but you left this "He's going to be halfway to his 25th birthday by the time he returns from his steroid suspension." That's what I was refering to. I saw what you added above it but it didn't seem to do it.

The Yankees are trading Johnson to free up salary they wrere what over the tax 27 million? They wont trade and add another 100 million dollar contrat.Use your head. Zito wants the Mets and the Mets want Zito. If push comes to shove the Mets can really outbid the Yankd because the Yanks will not get into a bidding war with the Mets who are under the luxury tax unlike the Yanks. If the Mets wanted they can go up to 17-20 mil a yr something I dont think the Yanks would do at this juncture in time.
I can not see the yankees going after zito… not at all.. if they deal UNIT its because they want to free up money for clemens.. which they have puplicly said they are going to go after if he comes back… no way in hell do they get clemens AND zito on top of signing pettitte to a 17 mill 1 year contract… its the press and boras, trying to up zitos price by bringing the yankees name into it since the rangers have set a deadline

I've never been a Zito fan and I think you are right: It makes no sense to go after Zito. I think that we should jump at the opportunity to trade Randy because he's our weakest link. He might be able to put up and average to above average ERA, but in the end he's a 16 million dollar 44 year old former ace. I can't see him being any better than our numerous minor league replacements.
I would be more than happy with a rotation of Wang, Mussina, Pettitte, Igawa, and Pavano/Karstens and later Hughes.
I'll be talking about the rotation, using some of the numbers from the Hardball Times's new article on 1/2/3/4/5 starters fairly soon.

Quote - A Redsox Fan Idiot named geoduck no quahog from Sosh
Johnson, 43, is said to want to play closer to his Arizona home, and the Yankees would not mind shedding his $16 million salary for next season and the uncertainty...caused by his age and his balky back.
The older version of Johnson has not been the dominant pitcher the Yankees expected when they acquired him from Arizona two years ago. In his first four seasons in Arizona, he won 81 games, four Cy Young awards and one World Series ring. In two years in New York, he has won 34 games, no awards and no World Series rings.
If the Yankees are able to trade Johnson, a left-hander — and it appears that they will be able to — they would be in position to pursue Zito...
Bizzaro world. Let's list all the reasons why the Yankees would love to get rid of Johnson, and then assume every other interested team will not only ignore those reasons, but somehow be willing to pick up $16M of pure risk AND give up a player.
...and no one's even talking about the friggen' knee. The guy's a time bomb. I would take him for 1 year at $10M and ask the Yankees to throw in a minor league prospect, but somehow I doubt Selig would allow $6M to change hands.
Unbelievable.
(and watch...idiot Hicks will fall for this trap if Zito turns down his weekend ultimatum)
Sox Have Starting Pitching Depth
http://mvn.com/mlb-redsox
Do you blame Cashman for not creating pitching depth better than Redsox?
Mike |

All right Mike. Let's compare starting pitching depth. Let's just start by saying I don't blame Cashman, I applaud him.
The Red Sox have
1. Schilling
2. Beckett
3. D-Mat
4. Papelbon
5. Wakefield (very good top-5)
6. Lester (if he's able to play)
7. Clement (if you call him a starter)
8. Snyder (29 year old journeyman)
9. Hansack (28 year old with two MLB starts under his belt. Did well at AA last season)
10. Pauley (Legit prospect who needs to spent a full season at AAA)
11. Runelyvs Hernandez (Who is constantly in the running for the worst pitcher in the major leagues)
12. Gabbard (Another legit prospect who still needs AAA time)
Pauley and Gabbard are at best C prospects. Let's compare this guy's list to the Yankee's list.
1. Moose (better than Schilling last season)
2. Wang
3. Pettitte
4. Igawa
5. Johnson
6. Pavano
7. Karstens
8. Rasner
9. Hughes
10. Sanchez
11. Clippard
12. White
(Wright, DeSalvo on 40 man)
The Yankees 1-12 has significantly more upside. Brian Cashman has not only assembled pitching depth, he probably has a better pitching staff than the Royals or Devil Rays sitting at AAA.
Pitching depth is the Yankee's single biggest strength.

Work ethic is what is going to seperate McCutchen. I watched his games at OU and he is one of the most fierce competitors that I have ever seen pitch. If OU would have had a closer this year he could have had some of the best numbers in college baseball. Watch out for him this spring coming out of the gates and useing a lot of built up anger (from the false allocations placed against him) and dominate his way through the minor leagus. What ever way you look at it the Yankees got a steal form the $30K or whatever the number was that they signed him for.

I'd like to re-iterate what was said in the comment above. McCutchen pitched the second most amount of innings in college baseball last year. Threw till his arm fell off. He has a closers demeanor.. that is for sure. He's fiery, regulary cursing on the mound. Very animated. He tops out.. when his arm isn't abused.. at 95.. his split/change is filthy.. he commands his curve ball. He is not "too good to be true".. he's under-rated in a pitching heavy organization.. and will have to prove himself as a mid round pick. I saw him pitch against Rice.. and he was filthy , without any giveup, and tons of moxie. I may be wrong, but if they give him a chance.. he won't dissapoint.

Christ must not have ever taken adderal because he is 100% wrong in saying it doesnt improver performance. if you dont have ADD and take it you are worlds above another person who doesnt take it.

I took adderal to study with in college and I don't have ADD, It didn't do that much for me. A few years ago everyone in the Bigs was taking greenies before they were illegal doesn't that do about the same thing as adderal?

Yes you are wrong...
I will be watching him pitch this coming up Friday and I guarantee you that the "50 games" haven't hurt him at all. In fact, Daniel's work ethic is what has made him who he is today. Fortunately you are not McCutchen but I would probably still advise you to look for another career.
