I read the book when it came out. I remember feeling that his post-WWII life came across as kind of creepy, actually.

Yes. That too. Very creepy at times actually. Which is why I would read some anecdote about him hitting on a woman in her 20's, then do the age math and think "He was 63 years old! Sheeeeesh!"

I read it way back when, and it instantly became one of my all-time faves.
I think I like creepy...
Ever read Richard Feynman's autobiography? Verrry creepy at times, and yet it works somehow.
But I agree with the overall point that the first half of his life and the war are the best parts of the book; just riveting at times.

Yeah, I read both "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman" and "What do you care what other people think?", a LONG time ago, although I don't really remember thinking they were creepy so much as cool. The scene I remember best was when he was describing setting his hands on fire by accident, for some reason.

Feynman's safecracking adventures at Los Alamos are what I remember most from those books. That and him deciding that he never wanted to think about what to order for dessert anymore, so he would always order chocolate ice cream.
