I can sympathize on wanting to gloss over the gruesome bits. I am just about to finish a book on the life of former Nagoya pitcher Shinichi Ishimaru, who died as part of a kamikaze squadron. After yet another firebombing of Tokyo and what happened to his girlfriend, I just put it down and finished one other book I was reading instead and am now trying to finish another (on Osamu Mihara) before I tackle the end of the Ishimaru book.
On Gehrig, I just also finished The Baseball Chronicles and it also had an article on Gehrig, which was heart wrenching enough. I'm not sure I could handle the book you reviewed.
The bringing in of the singer during the baseball radiocast reminded me of an episode of the Odd Couple where Tony Randall's character ends up calling part of an NFL game. One can oinly imagine what the singer's descriptions sounded like.
