Gravatar Sounds like a fantastic class. I've long since graduated, but would easily take (or help co-teach) such a discourse!

Gravatar Hi there, just found your blog. Are you saying that Good Will Hunting is not a good example of therapy? That movie resonates with me so much. I'm not a psychotherapist by the way, just happen to love the social sciences.

Gravatar Actually, yes, I am saying that. While the therapist Robin Williams portrays does some things well, his own issues are too much in the fore for him to be a really good example. There are very few examples of really good therapists in films or television.

Gravatar thanks! I'm reading your entries on In Treatment. I loved that show! So...how does one know whether they are a good fit to change careers and become a therapist?

Gravatar That's a good question. I think you need to be curious, to enjoy listening to other people's lives -- being nosy is a help here. You need to be able to hold secrets. To find gratification in the doing of the work -- there is no expectable recognition in the field. Introverts probably find it easier than extraverts. And it is important to be in therapy yourself.

Gravatar Thanks for the feedback. I actually heard some opposite advice in reference to the introvert/extrovert thing. I realize those two things are generalized categories, but i lean more towards introversion. Someone advised me that counseling would be tough for me because introverts recharge themselves in solitude. Counseling is constant interaction on a daily basis, and that could wear on me. I don't know what to think of that.

On the original topic of this post, what, if anything, do you think of the therapy portrayed by Dr. Melfi in The Sopranos?

Gravatar And what about "Prime"? Meryl Streep is too much...of a good thing.
