Gravatar This question concerns Paul's last session with Sophie. Wasn't Paul obligated to inform the police or child protective services that Sy had sex with Sophie?

Gravatar It's a very tricky issue. In the state where I live, therapists are indeed so-called "mandated reporters" but there is also the issue of holding in mind the best interests of the patient. In this case, Sophie is already furious that Paul contacted her mother and certainly would be if he reported Sy. My guess is that he is hoping that with time and work, Sophie will be empowered to act. We also do not know the age of consent where she lives, so it may be the reporting is not mandated.

The mandated reporting is a mixed blessing because it does not really allow for the judgement of the professional. I have not personally had a situation in my practice that would trigger a report in many years so I cannot honestly say what I would do if I had to balance the needs of my patient with legal liability.

Gravatar I'm glad to read your take on this---that was my first instinct: that reporting Sophie/Cy might be more harmful than if she stayed in treatment. But I got ripped a new one on another blog where I suggested that. I don't feel so stupid now.

Gravatar It is a judgment call, I believe. Concern about risk management often takes over. This week you will see that Paul specifically talks about the issue, though not in detail.

Gravatar I know this is over a year late, but I'm just now watching this and am reading the enlightening commentary after each episode. And I just feel so bad for Sophie! Definitely my favorite patient. Does anyone know what the pills were? (If that is answered in a later episode, just ignore me.)

Gravatar I don't recall that what they were was revealed.

The new season starts in a little over a week!
