On the question of whether or not Alex is gay - there are so many possibilities there. It could be that he is genuinely attracted to men, but it could also be that he envies the openness he describes with this particular circle of friends...they are what they are and seemingly don't care what others think. That would be the opposite of Alex. OR, it could be, that somehow in Alex's mind, homosexuality is the ulitmate rebellion against an intolerant father who has "traditional" ideas about what makes a man a man. If this is the case, then Alex wouldn't be truly happy in a homosexual lifestyle, either. ( I went to school with a girl who adopted this lifestyle just to upset her affluent, religious parents, and then went back to a straight lifestyle once she 'grew out of it.')
One issue I keep wondering about...will we ever discover who the leak/leaks were who told Alex all about Paul's personal life? Is it significant? I keep wondering about this.
And I agree...I have no idea how Paul can stick to the truth about Alex's progress and not unintentionally undermine his career.
Indeed we have no idea whether or not Alex is gay, bi-sexual or straight, or how his fascination with his gay friends is related to the rest of his life and his self=perception. He is a deeply conflicted man who is quite unsure of himself, contrary to his presentation of himself.
We'll never know how Alex learned what he did about Paul. t feels to me like a bit of a hole in the plot and it is one place where they depart from what feels realistic to me. The whole episode of Alex's prying and use of what he learned was just dropped by Paul and this would be unlikely in actual therapy, not because it is important to learn how Alex found the information, but what it was about for him and how he felt having it and throwing it at Paul.
I think Alex was saying goodbye; I think he was making plains to kill himself.
As many people make the decision to kill themselves, Alex was too calm and too happy to go back...
One of the signs of suicide...
I don't think we will see him again.
