I was really affected by this storyline and wanted to say thanks for your analysis---these wrap-ups are very helpful.

"In Treatment" is the best soap opera I've ever seen. I'm really hooked.
LAURA
Though she was physically very beautiful and successful in her career, I was repulsed by her description of her sexual encounters and her way of relating to her fiance and her therapist - she was extremely manipulative.
PAUL
Though his compassion and humanitarian nature is appealing, he seems to be easily conned. In general, his controlling and withholding behaviors are obnoxious. I would describe his relationships with Laura as "the blind leading the blind."

Unlike a soap opera, this is a reasonably good depiction of therapy. It is Paul's job to listen to Laura, or any patient, and hear what they say as their experience, regardless of its relationship to objective truth. The therapist is not charged with determining truth but to help the patient see how she is constructing the world she lives in. The therapist can only know what the patient tells him.
