Gravatar Hecate is beautiful. I particularly like the wide edging.

I cannot provide any design help for your adventure, but was wondering if some stitch patterns might generate more ideas.

Have you seen the flickering flames patten by elann? http://www.elann.com/ShowFreePat....asp? Id=97024Or What about the pattern that Sally of the Rainey sisters calls Japanese flame? I believe she knitted it with two strands, one being a kid haze mohair. It might work with some changes and lace weight yarn.

Your project sounds fascinating. I am wondering if you are envisioning a "tight" pattern of flames like the ones previously mentioned or whether you are thinking along the lines of a flame stitch that is more dramatic like a bargello flame stitch. If you are thinking of a bargello flame stitch I am wondering if a quilting book on bargello quilts would help. It seems like that would translate to knitting from quilting because of the strong graphic nature of it. It would lend itself to charting very easily. (I am wondering if yarnovers could define the flames.) My favorite bargello quilt book is Bargello Tapestry Quilts by Marilyn Doheny. A needlepoint reference on bargello might also be helpful in figuring out
how to transition the design to a lace pattern for knitting.
