I like the fluting you've done. It looks good - much better than the ribbing that the columns actually have. The beads may not be as visible to me as they are in person - but the few I see add a nice accent.
Leaf patterns may work for the scallops at the top of the column.
I'm looking forward to seeing more.

or this http://knitting-and.com/wiki/Fluted_Lace and this stitch might be a great beginning to design an acanthus leaf. This is a great site - free stitch patterns.
I am also interested in hearing more about the different motifs you have in mind.
