Gravatar This post figures more fully an earlier piece of yours, which compared your son's reliance on the DSM in his work versus your trusting of your own abilities and expertise. We beginning therapists lack the years in working with those 'essential' ingredients, indeed.

With your metaphor, I'm reminded of Jung's emphasis on the mid-life as a period for serious 'bread-making'--once the 'ingredients' of life have been collected/experimented with.

Gravatar Indeed it does. Thank you.

Gravatar As I read the first paragraph, I thought: just like therapy.

Nice post!

Gravatar Doing therapy is a lot like making bread for clients, too. The learning new ways, trying things out, mucking up more than a few times, and struggling to find a willingness to try again. Just like the bread making.

Gravatar Good point!

Gravatar More on it from the client's angle:
When we are new at it, we are unsure of the ingredients (therapist), have to follow the recipe carefully (watch the clock? bring a list of topics?) and we are curious about the other ways to do it (lots of reading and research), trying to understand how to make it better or easier.
Just a reminder to the therapists out there.

Gravatar More good points! Thank you.
