Interesting topic, and that's a great list! I like the title of the course, too. I would add "Good Will Hunting" to the list.

There's a new TV series called "Mental" which is on FOX (I watch it online)... which takes place on a psychiatric ward.
It may work for your purposes.

Hi, I've been reading for a while but this is the first time I've commented. Thanks so much, you have a great blog and I really enjoy reading. I'm a long term client and find it fascinating to hear your viewpoint.
My recommendation would definitely fit more in the "interesting look at mental illness" category but I think would make for some interesting discussions: "Rachel Getting Married."

I HATE the show "Mental" -- I am afraid I would be hard pressed to have anything good to say about it.
I liked Rachel Getting Married a lot but I want films in which therapists play a prominent role.

Patch Adams - based on real life story - founder of the Gesundheit movement. He isn't a pure therapist - but believes mental health and physical health must be looked at holistically and that 'patients' are the experts. Anyone working in medicine or psychiatry should watch it.
Also Sybil
Definitely Good Will Hunting - all therapists should HAVE to watch this!

The movie Antwone Fisher has as part of it's central theme the relationship between the title character and his shrink.

Good suggestions, but Patch Adams is not a therapist so he doesn't fit the model. I think I will propose a second series later on Madness in Movies and Cuckoo's Nest would fit there. I hadn't thought of Antwone Fisher -- that's a possibility.

I haven't seen it in a long time so my memories are vague, but Good Will Hunting might make for some interesting discussion of countertransference. Of course, The Sopranos would give you plenty to talk about.

I meant to include Good Will Hunting.
I think the Sopranos would make a whole series by itself!

How about Reign Over Me? (I think that's the title).

I thought of that one, but there is no therapist in it -- I liked the movie a lot.

For those of us who couldn't take such a class, have you also considered a blog series about the same topic? I think it would be very interesting; just like your In Treatment commentary is!

RE - Reign over me - Perhaps we're thinking of a different movie. The one I'm thinking of does have a therapist that is played by Liv Tyler.

I confess I think of her as a minor character. This might be partly to do with the fact that she was in my son's class in elementary school. I think Cheadle was a far more significant character in that film.

Agree that she was more of a minor character. I did find it amusing that Cheadle's character kept trying to get advice on the street. Does that happen to you? Cheadle was great in that role, as he is in most of his films.
Take care.

There's an article in the NYT today reviewing _Shrink_, which is also really a discussion of psychoanalysis/therapy in film.
