Gravatar My psychiatrist raised her fee to $195 for 50 minutes and at that point I had to drop her and go with someone who participated in my insurance plan. I thought she was wonderful, but how could I justify spending that amount of money when I could see another psychiatrist for a $20 co-pay. This was just for meds management, not therapy. If I was in therapy with a great therapist I would pay whatever it takes.

My son's therapist charges $125 for 45 minutes and doesn't take any insurance. He makes a good amount of money, but has to see 35 to 40 clients a week, and during parts of the year (summer) his caseload drops tremendously. I think its pretty stressful making a living like that and I give him a lot of credit - he does it because he wants to help people, not to become rich.

My insurance company infuriated me when my son had neuro-psychological testing that cost $2400 out of pocket. They wouldn't reimburse me, and after appealing twice I finally got $250 from them. I'm fortunate that I can afford to pay for what my son needs, but what about those who can't?
