Whenever I despair over the disappearance of all our hard-won traditional freedoms in a mass of postmodern goo, I come here knowing Dr. Dawg is battling to preserve our "archaic privileges". You go, guy.

I'm curious, Peter. What is "archaic" about expecting sworn witnesses to tell the truth to parliamentary committees?

Absolutely nothing to a democrat, as our archaic ancestors fought and died to establish. But to a self-important, unelected senior bureaucrat with a job to do, it's all part of the ancien regime.

Excellent post Dawg.
The ancient privileges of Parliament were hard won and should never be taken for granted. Tragically, in a bureaucratic state with much of Parliament's power usurped by the Prime Minister's Office and the Cabinet, there is an inclination towards treating MPs and Parliamentary Committees as sideshows. An inclination which must be resisted.
Your post gets it exactly right.
