As usual, Monty Python was way ahead of the game:

(search for "Judean People's Front").
The serious part is, of course, is the question: what DO you do with the ones who won't put down their weapons?
How much effort do we put into putting all the "splinters" back into the mainstream?

None. There will always be hard men attempting to be spoilers and carry on the war. The best thing to be done with them is to keep them marginalised and the British Army off the streets. They want attention, and a return to the long fight, and it is best not to give it to them, no matter what they do. Let the police find them.

Hopefully, James, if I might extend your metaphor a bit, the splinters will be carried away by the mainstream.

. . . it reminds me of The Lieutenant of Inishmore, which played recently at the Gladstone Theatre.

You put them down. The first order of business for any government is the defense of the nation.

Thanks for the vid. I'm kinda "old school" yet...
Boris: yes, marginalizing the "hard men" works on paper. Writ large, like in Afghanistan or Iraq, its a bit harder. Slowly, but surely. Even a relatively low level war like Northern Ireland took decades.
And, yes, lets hope its the apparently less-politicized police, and not the army. Apparently, the head copper has said he wants the army to stay out. (Its only an arrest, not a conviction, but damn, a 17 year old arrested? Shows the desperation, perhaps.)
Dawg: yes, washing away the splinters would be a good idea too. Peace does grow, sometimes slowly, but only if people are tired of fighting. And I believe that the Irish are.
Who knows, I never thought I'd live to see the day that the "Chuckle Brothers" would be a real act:

From what I know about the former militants, on both sides, is that many of them very easily turned from political assassins to run-of-the-mill drug dealers and thugs.
However, I doubt that McGuinness and Adams have entirely forgotten how to make "offers they can't refuse". Hard to believe they wouldn't have a small idea who did this. And not hard to believe that they take this as a direct threat to them personally.
Lets hope this doesn't turn into a Catholic on Catholic mini-war...

Gosh, James, you should have just kept quiet. I thought you were citing the transcript as an adjunct to the vid!

Hey, a good bit all round. Although more attuned to the Middle East of any generation, its unfortunately true when you're dealing with the fringe of the fringe. But now, even a crowd of one can be dangerous...
