Gravatar It's really quite simple, Dawg: newspapers are concerned only with sales, and scandal sells. As you said yourself, the majority of people, whether explicitly or not, support abortion so writing about them is not going to stoke the op-ed fires, hence the need to fill column-inches with "all the old familiar faces".

I suggest going with your original plan and let this slide, at least for today.

Happy Canada Day, Dawg.

Gravatar As you said yourself, the majority of people, whether explicitly or not, support abortion so writing about them is not going to stoke the op-ed fires

Well, they could draw attention to those who have rather colourful ways of describing the sexual fascists, fetus-fetishists and pornography-obsessed social and religious conservatives. I'm sure that would stoke the fires.

I, personally, have been waiting a long time for our hard-working MSM to properly place the anti-choicers within the network of our society's agents of intolerance...the bigots, the racists, the homophobes and the proto-fascists.

...not to mention the death-worshipers, who support capital punishment and the deaths of civilians in war.

Although personally opposed to abortion, I became resolutely and unequivocally pro-choice when I finally saw that big picture.

Gravatar Okay, I'll bite, just why does an abortionist deserve the order of Canada?

And before you get your kickers in a knock, I am pro a women's right to act according to the dicates of her conscience and reason. I am quite happy with there being no law governing abortion but it still doesn't make an abortionist a hero in my book.

Gravatar Kateland:

Henry endured gross judicial persecution, imprisonment, ill-treatment in prison, and vile attacks from militant "right-to-lifers" (including a physical assault with garden shears), because he not only believed in something, but acted on those beliefs.

Thanks to Henry, we have freedom of choice in this country (although access is still a problem). Now, let me riddle you one back: why on earth would Conrad Black deserve such an honour? What did he ever do for others?

Gravatar Now, let me riddle you one back: why on earth would Conrad Black deserve such an honour? What did he ever do for others?

That's not how it works. Progressives don't get to lead the inquisitions; they are obliged to respond to them and that is all.

The explanation for Black's award escape me, so we'll just have to fall back on the criteria for being named Officer of the Order of Canada, which are:

Recognizes: a lifetime of achievement and merit of a high degree, especially in service to Canada or to humanity at large.

I don't even think that was true at the time he was awarded it.

Gravatar There is also a blog article at MacLean's by Andrew Potter, and I just commented there.

Writing that comment reminded me of some facts that are not generally known, but this would be a good time to air them.

Dr Morgentaler taught the aspiration technique that he used at the clinic, to other physicians. Many worked at the clinic, unofficially. Morgentaler took the fall for all the other doctors. It was strategic, and it was sheer courage under fire. He chose to be the public face of abortion rights so that others - doctors, and women - would not be maligned and attacked as he was, and still continues to be.

Gravatar I don't think you can equate support for (or resignation over) legal abortion with celebrating Morgantaler as a national hero. Do you assume that everybody who supports the current law would or should be unconflicted if their twelve year old announced to a table of dinner guests that he/she wants to be an abortionist?

Gravatar Henry is a doctor, Peter. And he stays that way until we start referring to appendectomists, hysterectomists and splenectomists. Deal?

I wonder what the reaction at the table would be if the 12-year-old announced that he wanted to be a gynecologist? : )

Morgentaler wasn't just a guy who performed abortions. He put his body on the line for women's rights for years, was sent to jail and kept there despite acquittal after acquittal, was mistreated in prison, denied drugs for his heart, denied parole, has been both verbally and physically assaulted, and he stayed the course. And eventually, largely thanks to him, the battle was won.

Yup, he's a hero, all right, and the honour is long overdue.

Enjoy your evening, Peter. I know I shall.

Gravatar I wonder what the reaction at the table would be if the 12-year-old announced that he wanted to be a gynecologist?

Maybe a quietly muttered "precocious little nit!"?

I shall definitely enjoy my evening. I'll be celebrating the long overdue recognition of Randy Bachman long into the night.

Gravatar If Ahenakew can be stripped of his Order of Canada because of his offensive comments, then Morgentaler should never have received an the Country's highest Civilian award shoudl never have gone to such a divisive man.

In a poll Conducted by the Globe and Mail 92% of Canadian respondents said he should NOT receive the Order of Canada, whereas only 8 % said he should.

I beleive it should be taken away from him. He, contrary to the idea of the award, does not make all Canadians proud.
