thanks..interesting stuff..i am in grad school for clinical counseling...nice to be refreshed on what i am learning...may be a good source me..thanks.

Super! It was a good stuff to read about.Thank you.

great stuff but dont let it go to your head!!!

have a great day

Found your page by googling "psychological defense mechanisms", Thought I was onto something useful until I clicked on your examples. Political extremism discredits your science.

Veeery interesting...but true! Thanks. I needed to read some of this.

Isaac Newton,Einstein,Davinci,Mendel,Darwin ,Galalieo, do you think they thought they were the "smartest" men in the world?

These great men are alive today in many of us, but these defense mechanisms prevent the persistance required to get the great ideas into the "light" of day.
"In the end humility is a defense mechanism"

Personally, I found the site claiming George Bush to be Satan quite hilarious, and although the extent of the evidence presented does seem rather excessive, I think you have miscategorized other's humour as insanity because your own political sensitivities don't allow you to see the humour in it.

This was just GREAT,
thank You for this text!!!!

Great content and explanations on this page, though at this point I'd say your conservative bias looks a little bit more like denial, distortion, and fantasy. :p

Very helpful article. I first read it on survivorsvoices.com and really got a lot out of it. I can sure see a lot of my coping mechanisms explained. I like the links for examples also.Thank you.

I didn't like your examples, because they often stretched the definition. An equally biased and possibly more appropriate one for your "displacement" would be to say that Bush attacked Afghanistan when most of the offending terrorists originated from Saudi Arabia.

It's a pity, because they rest of the article is very intelligently written, but the examples drag it down into simple-minded political propaganda. You should think about separating those two interests.

I'm puzzled by the example of people with a fear of flying confronting that fear directly by learning to fly as "neurotic". The initial mechanisms might be Reaction Formation, but the experiance and familurarity with flying should cure the initial phobia, which is neurotic or worse. It seems like a rational approach to me.

I know two people who are afraid of flying, and the fact that they are not "driving" is a singificant part of the fear, in one case, most of it. In these people this might be a way to confront this fear is stages.

I'd be interested in hearing why you put this in Level III.

Mike

AWESOME SITE!! thank you

Interesting. I found your classification of the defence mechs very helpful. This has lead to better understanding of this topic. Thanks.

I'm an analytically trained clinician of 25 years & happened upon your very excellent, comprehensive, and REAL descriptions of defense mechanisms. I was doing some research for a presentation at a professional conference.

I think this is great material and will be helpful to laymen as well as clinicians.

well what a coincident, I read today a news on yahoo "Attack on Baghdad Shiite slum kills 161" description says "The bloodshed underlined the impotence of the Iraqi army and police" I was searching what defence is this , when I found this site. So can any one help me when an impotent is lloking to put blame on some one else, what you call it ? Dr. Seti ?

If you are blaming someone else and it is YOU who have the feelings thoughts or behaviors that you ascribe to the other person, it is called PROJECTION. If you are blaming someone who is less threatening than the actual people who have the thoughts, feelings or behaviors in question, then it is DISPLACEMENT.

As a trainee psychiatrist I found your explanations of these pyschological phenomena very useful but was offended by the links you had chosen as examples. This item purports to be an unbiased source of information prepared for the benefit of the public by an expert in the field and I feel it is entirely inappropriate to then decorate it with such partisan political statements.

On an academic note, I disagree with your example of Holocaust denial in the sense of a psychological defense mechanism. I understood that the denial was intended to be a subconscious process.

It is true that you know your stuff but you can use Isreals behavior in ans as all your examples and should to show you are not using your intellegent for extremeism.

I believe this info is very key to living a fulfilled and enlightened life.

Dr Sanity,

Nicely written. May I suggest section elaborating lack of defense mechanism in children under 6 years, and when they are placed in stressful/fearful state causes uncontrolled flare of emotional states to almost painful and unbearable for the chi8ld forcing them into abnormal states like dissociated and obedient states.

And of course how usual defense mechanisms develops in children whom grow within normal range of care and feeling secure with their carers...

Sam

wow this stuff is really good..i enjoyed it

Looks to me like you are a wingnut using psychology to legitimize your distorted beliefs. Evangelicals also sometimes do this - pick and choose from legitimate science when it seems to mesh with their beliefs or meet their goals.

Extremely well written and thought out article, but your "examples" destroy your credibility by making you seem like a paranoid wack-job.

You might consider 'beneficial dissociation' of your two minds.

There are a number of stressful medical conditions affecting many of us today. One of the broadest topics is anxiety disorders, with millions of people suffering to some degree or another. Specific symptoms vary greatly from person to person. As anxiety disorders grow progressively worse without treatment you should see your doctor immediately if you suspect that you may be suffering from one of these illnesses. http://www.buy-xanax-online-now.com/

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Hello, Professor . I wish you could have added more details in the examples such as why does it examplify this behavior and that behavior. But you probably didn't have the time. Still, it was a good read

I remember an excerpt of George Valliant's Adaptation to Life from a an assigned reading and happened upon your site. I appreciate your presentation.

What brought Valliant to mind is what is going on in our society and government today. I did NOT check out your examples... but from the comments made before mine, I can assume that you and I are of one mind.

It is amazing how skillfully these defense mechanisms are used. And how these distortions sadly keep people stuck in a bad place.
