It will be very interested to see how 60 Minutes presents this segment. Will they also be sensitive to the feeling of Muslins or are they willing to incur the ire of the Muslim community by telling the truth? Richard Nieporent | Email | Homepage | 03.13.05 - 4:29 pm | #

The Doc is correct that this behavior is a sickness. In every culture there are men so inadequate that they feel it is their "right" to beat women and make them submit to the man's will. But in Islam it is part of the religion. The Koran is used to justify this kind of behavior and even worse. It is used to justify political and economic oppression as well as the physical oppression. The men in Islam who beat women as part of their religious faith are pathetic impotent wimps. It is no wonder they can be convinced to blow themselves up. Dr PAt, have you noticed that the organisers of the politically-correct Ann Arbo rFilm festival seem to have left this film out of their program for the festival beginning this tuesday? Of course, there are umpteen documentaries that will be screened that will follow the Ward Churchill/Michael Moore line of thought. wolverine | Email | Homepage | 03.13.05 - 11:44 pm | #

I wholeheartedly condemn the oppression of women by Islamic law.
That said, these are the people you wanted to free. Islam and democracy are mutually exclusive. I have a feeling that I know which one they will eventually choose. Thousands of years of faith, versus The Great Satan? Hmmm.
And, since Shrub now supposedly wants to spread democracy throughout the world, I am sure he will get to the Netherlands eventually.
But I wouldn't hold your breath. No oil that I know of in the Netherlands. Mitzell | Email | Homepage | 03.14.05 - 1:51 am | #

Mitzell, this is where I think you (and liberals in general) are wrong on this issue. Because the road ahead seems difficult does not mean that we shouldn't try. Islam and democracy are NOT mutually exclusive.
Throughout history great evils have been performed in the name of great religions. But that does not condemn the religion itself. The rulers of Spain claimed to be upholding the Roman Catholic faith during the Inquisition. Because we had a weak Pope at the time many innocent people died. Until Hitler bastardized it, the swastica was a christian cross. Catholocism and christianity in general are considered to be "good" today (well, unless you're militantly anti-religion like some on the left have become).
I believe that democracy can highjack Islam. It won't be easy by a long shot. There will be bombings and violence in the Middle East for decades, perhaps even a century or two. But what is the alternative? Ignore them? Nuke them and turn the whole neighbourhood into a parking lot? Conquer them and subjugate them? What's the answer, if not to offer them a taste of freedom and hope they want more?

I checked out the site for the film fest and saw nothing following the Moore/Churchill train of thought.
I saw Thoughts in the Presence of Fear’ is based on Wendell Berry’s essay in response to the terrorist attacks of September 11/2001. Director Herb E. Smith uses images of rural Kentucky to illustrate Berry’s case for a localized, “peaceable economy.” and another about
turban wearing Sikh's in the Bay Area and how their lives are affected now.
Dreams of Sparrows is about Iraq but not enflamed. A movie about techno music and the regular run of the mill film, fest stuff. Was that documentary slated and then removed? That would be sad. I'd like to see it myself. Christine | Email | Homepage | 03.14.05 - 12:38 pm | #

Christine - that documentary about Islam was considered and then not even put on th eprogram. As far as my comment on the fact that most of the stuff is of the Michael Moore variety - it is based on the fact that there are a lot of short movies being shown in the student and the competetion section that probably are even more outrageous than Moore.
This I have heard from a friend who is involved in organising the Festival, and who, despite being from the liberal-left of the political spectrum, is disgusted by a lot of the movies that the committee pre-screened.
The Festival begins today, so I will pick up a couple of the brochures. wolverine | Email | Homepage | 03.15.05 - 10:02 am | #

It is appalling to see comments that people post about Islam here. Is it such a burden to find out facts yourself? The Quran has English translations but people would rather read it upside down or listen to some fame-seeking half enlightened individual. Nobody seems to care that this woman has told lies in the Netherland to get where she is, she got to be MP on the platform of condemning Islam. If truly Muslims in Netherland do these acts, it is more to do with them and a lot less to do with Islam. You have no idea. alex | Email | Homepage | 08.21.06 - 7:34 am | #
