How come NOW isn't demanding that we do something about women's rights in Iran? Van Helsing | Email | Homepage | 06.12.05 - 6:48 pm | #

The doc tackles that question in several of her previous posts. See I am woman hear me whine and The consequences of enabling terror
She has a post on the side bar that is interesting too called "the girlie women of today's feminist movement". Worth reading van helsing. Jan | Email | Homepage | 06.12.05 - 6:58 pm | #

I just checked out the sidebar link to the "girlie women" post. Dr. Sanity describes my exact same experience in a different male-dominated field.
It's clear that the women's movement DID achieve its goals throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Although women will always need to be on the lookout for unfair treatment, male chauvinism is pretty well dead in the U.S. today.
The same can also be said of the black rights movement. American blacks in general can no longer claim that white racism is keeping them down. However, many black activists have a major stake in promoting racism, just like NOW and the Harvard whiner groups hunt for issues that will keep the "victim" issue alive, long past its due date.
Back to the topic--this photo is awesome!!!!! Patriarchy and misogyny will never die unless women take steps to end it--through protest marches, civil disobedience, whatever. There are many well-known Saul Alinsky-type action techniques that women can use to win their rights, and NOW types should be teaching some of those techniques to Iranian and other Muslim women.
True, most can't be used in a police state, but some can. Wherever women organize themselves they can win major changes. Muslim misogeny will be a tough nut to crack, but it's certainly doable.
I fully expect to be able to thank Osama bin Laden in a few decades for starting the Muslim equal-rights ball rolling. In the future, if one wants to find an example of the Law of Unintended Consequences, this will be one of those examples. Promethea | Email | Homepage | 06.12.05 - 8:55 pm | #

> How come NOW isn't demanding that we do something about women's rights in Iran?
Simple: The president in office is neither liberal nor Democrat. It's only when a liberal or Dem is in office that they make noise.
The treatment of women under the Taliban was something they constantly sought to draw attention to --- when Clinton was in office.
Do they give even a modicum of acknowledgement to Bush for (at the very least) substantially improving the state of women in Afghanistan?

On the primary topic of this posting, I wish these women well. They'd best keep these things impromptu and unpredictable, lest Those-In-Charge arrange a less than spectacular response to their "outrageous behavior" by the male population.
It's also certainly not outside the realm of Islamofascist behaviors to arrange for Very Bad Things to happen to any woman who gets photographed at some future point. Someone involved should keep a log of anything odd that happens to these women, with the intent of getting it statistically analyzed for an excess of "A Series of Unfortunate Events". God, what courage these women have!!! I am going to link to this story and inform other bloggers about what is happening. If NOW won't speak up, the rest of America should. Write your Congressmen and the President asking them to condemn the actions of the Iran regime. The people of Iran will hear. seawitch1261 | Email | Homepage | 06.12.05 - 10:55 pm | #
