Given the almost complete absence of integrity or moral compass on the Left, Dhims are reduced to polling as a basis for their position du jour. What they really think won't fly, and they know it, hence the duplicitous behavior.

And yes, the vocal extreme over there will accept the flip-flopping because the national mouthpieces have become very cagy. If there is a way to toe the party line on an issue, it will get lots of lip service (and press). Once that particular position becomes untenable, they simply shut up on the issue and drag out another, valid or not, to keep the MSM busy saying and printing the "right" message.

And of course there is never any retribution. The Times is not going to run a front page article on what a Kennedy or Kerry or Clinton or Pelosi (or the Times) said last week, or month or year, as opposed to today's tripe. That might damage some carefully protected images, which would never do.

There is no question the Dems are chronic wafflers. I doubt Kerry can order his own meal in a restaurant without polling the other diners. They know nothing but politics and all their actions are geared to recovering what they feel is their rightful position of control. My opinion is that this stems from their secular worldview. They cannot formulate a position on anything when they have no moral compass guiding them. The NY Times will not publish inane cartoons yet has no problem lauding the "piss Christ" and "dung covered Mary". With a guidepost like that, it's no wonder the Democrats & MSM can't formulate a clear position on anything.

> sorry, that was a low blow--however true

If it's true and important(which it obviously is), it ain't a low blow.

> Given the almost complete absence of (...a...) moral compass on the Left,

They have a moral compass. It just points in all directions at once.

360 degrees of North. Man, it'd be hard to navigate with something like that...

“The NSA surveillance program is crucial to national security and should be continued. We support it. It is also illegal and a threat to civil liberties. We oppose it and, of course, George Bush must be held accountable for his illegal actions.”

Sure sounds like "I voted for the war before I voted against it" to me...

> 360 degrees of North. Man, it'd be hard to navigate with something like that...

Why do you think it's all Going South on them? (8-)

I think they are more upset that they were not let into the loop. If they can claim some credit in promoting national security, they will play ball.

Having been married to a malignant narcissist for a number of years, I think that I have insight to the similarities between my ex-wife and the folks that run the Democratic Party:

1) An overwhelming sense of hubris. Liberal Democrats are so SURE they're right about cutting and running in the Middle East that it never occurs to them what the fallout will be- a new Islamoterrorist state awash in oil, a collapse in whatever human intel we've developed in Iraq, a huge emboldening of present Islamofacist regimes in the area, etc. There is absolutely NO consideration to the question of "what now?" to these folks. Don't believe me? Try asking the "what now" question to a liberal friend and check out the blank look you get.

2) A near total resistance to change in personal behavior and outlook. After Clinton defeated Bush in '92, Republicans (no winner party, them) mostly looked at organization, funding, voter turnout, palatability of message to the voting public. Contrast this to the vitriol ejected on a daily basis by DNC, Howard Dean, MoveOn, etc. Nothing is EVER their fault- so they attack scapegoats (fundies, white bigots, evil Republicans, the rich, stupid voters, etc) instead of learning how to block, run and tackle better.

3)Complete dishonesty with everyone, including themselves. I realize we're on shaky ground here, since politics everywhere is riddled with lies and deceit. So here, it's a matter of degree:

Was there anything more pathetic than Willie Clinton parsing the meaning of what the word "is" means?

How about Harry Reid demanding the return of all Abramoff money by all politicians except him?

Or Kerry telling us that he voted FOR defense spending before he voted against it?

4) A near-total emotional meltdown when criticized personally. Want to have some fun? Try calling a liberal Democrat's patriotism and judgement into question. Just to be safe, do this on a lefty blog, NOT in person. Most moonbats have firmly convinced themselves that trashing your own country and interfering with its effort to fight in wartime is an act of supreme patriotism. The times that I have called this into question to a moonbat have been memorable, to say the least.

5) A pronounced tendency to RUIN nearly everything they are involved with. Malignant narcissists tend to ruin interpersonal relationships, which damages marriages, jobs, and kids. The leaders of the Democratic Party ruin social relationships- ability to work with the other party, trust of the voters, respect of socio-political groups which they malign (fundies, white males, married couples, parents, taxpayers, etc) The truly scary thing about narcissists is the drive that they apparently have to force everyone around them to conform with their cockeyed view of reality.

We see this at every level of the Democratic "vision" for America: the courts, the bureaucracy, the schools, and the workplace. Despite a record of failure at nearly everything they have attempted, they're always just a couple of programs (and tax increases) away from Nirvana.

Doc, you know better than I about the low success rate in treating narcissists- so I'll just conclude by saying that it doesn't happen very often. The best thing you can do for your own sanity is to put as much distance between yourself and the narcissist as you practically can. They ain't gonna change.

Have you ever noticed how the Democrats particularly don't know what to think when the polls are against them on a particular issue?

Such polls were obviously rigged by The Vast Right Wing Goldsteinist-Republican-Bushist-Rovist Conspiracy, of course. The Party can never be wrong, Comrades.

Was there anything more pathetic than Willie Clinton parsing the meaning of what the word "is" means?

Looked to me like he'd gone into total lawyer mode -- a lawyer who got caught with his hand in the cookie jar trying to shyster-technicality his way into beating the rap.

"It all depends on what the meaning of 'is' is" has become a running joke, repeated every time someone tries to lawyer-handwave his way out of something.

This is actually how a political party that is totally desperate --because it believes it may never again achieve power--behaves.

Actually, I thought a coup followed by a bloody purge was how such a Party behaves, i.e. sieze power NOW! while they still can.

Ken:

Slight problem - the left/Dems have been trying very hard to get gun control passed so the country would be effectively disarmed. However, England and Australia, not to mention the Distric Of Columbia, showed that only the already law-abiding were affected by those laws, and by disarming themselves it gave the predators a great opportunity.

In the US, the left voluntarily disarmed themselves (at least as far as firearms went, and it seems as far as ideas with popular support went too...) and it's real hard to pull off a coup&purge when you don't have any weapons to do it with!

J.

The Dems moral compass is spinning so fast it took off like a helicopter and hasn't been seen since.

I think the reason the Dems are trying to straddle the NSA issue is that their kook fringe leftist tinfoil hat base is where their money comes from, forcing them to parrot the leftwing line. Meanwhile, they also realise that their kook fringe friendly positions are not playing well in Peoria, so they are forced to talk out of both sides of their mouths. They are indeed desperate.

Yes, they are unhinged now, but I continue to hold out hope that Democrats can return to being a patriotic party that believes that government can be a force for good. It's always a fair debate to have on any issue -- what government actions constitute rights protection versus rights infringement.

When did we last have such debates? 1962? Or do I just think that because it is beyond the reach of my own memory?

AVI - I completely concur. I do not believe it is possible with the current leadership of the Democrats who are held in thrall by the lunatic left wing in this country, however. I don't know how it happened, but the Democrats have taken a sharp left turn and become truly a party of the extremism that they condemn on the right. I think for them to change they will have to slapped on the side of the face yet again--the same way the Republican party was in the paranoid 50's. The Republicans were able to get rid of the extremists and return to the mainstream and so can the Dems if they want to.

Q: What's the difference between the Democrats and the Communists?

A: There's a difference?

Yeah, if they want to, Doc. The problem is that every time the DNC considers cutting the loonies loose, they remember that magic 48% that voted against Bush in the last election. And they're damned if they'll do anything to drive that number down - as they need all the help they can get.
