I'm glad to read that this is causing controversy in Turkey, and that the government is looking into this. pst314 | Email | Homepage | 08.31.06 - 8:55 am | #

Both "diversity" and "Allah" are the gods for whose sake truth must be denied and distorted.

People who have lived under totalitarian regimes will tell you that the converted Pinocchio, Aramis, etc. are not exclusive to Islam -- they were Marxists, Communists, or whatever.
When I did this post (with apologies for the shameless self-promotion) I received several emails from people who had lived under Soviet regimes where they were taught that everything had been invented by the Soviets.

I've read some North Korean stuff that will curl your hair - they believe they're the master race, they're better than anyone else, yadda yadda yadda...and could EASILY defeat the USA but won't out of superior moral restraint you see... after all, life is soooooooooooo GREAT in the commie north they're content to stay there and defend themselves from the wretchedly poor South.... it's nuts. I always wondered if only 5 to 10 year olds - and the Dictator believed this stuff -like Santa Clause.
Fortunately for us...as long as the USMC exists we'll be able to kick in their fantasy doors and show them what 'power projection' is as opposed to fantasy projection. John | Email | Homepage | 08.31.06 - 9:55 am | #

Clearly, the terrorists have already won if we allow children in wheelchairs to feel accepted. jpe | Email | Homepage | 08.31.06 - 10:14 am | #

meanwhile, I saw the report of 22 bombs going off in Thailand - the report said since early 2004, 1500 people have been killed. The report calls it a muslim insurgency. I guess the Buddhists didn't take proper note when the taliban blew up those ancient statues of the Buddha in Afghanistan. We certainly wouldn't want the Public to think of bombers and murderers as terrorists. goesh | Email | Homepage | 08.31.06 - 10:20 am | #

Clearly, the terrorists have already won if we allow children in wheelchairs to feel accepted
This is a distortion and exactly what the left tries to do in these kind of discussions. If we point out how reality is being distorted for a political agenda, then the only conclusion is that we must hate children in wheelchairs and not want them to be "accepted".
What I want to be accepted is reality. You call yourselves the "reality-based community" jpe, and yet you feel free to distort, obfuscate, and otherwise ignore it when it suits you. I happen to think there a a multitude of ways for children in wheelchairs to gain acceptance; and no need to photoshop, deceive, and otherwise manipulate people into taking your point of view. "to distort, obfuscate, and otherwise ignore"
I have a better term for this:
It is simply called, "Lying".

The Belmont Club has a post that is very relevant to this issue -- the process of altering the future by manipulating symbols in the present.

If you want to look into exactly how education is being distorted by diversity guidlines and other such nonsense check out The Language Police by Diane Ravitch. She explains how textbooks are adopted by states and how this process is constantly being bombarded by fringe intrest groups.
The problem is that in many cases both the extreme left and right have too much power in editing the books. For the left its all about social equality, you can't depict girls as doing girly things, like playing with dolls. You can't have the ealderly depicted as being unhealthy or dying. For the right its all about morality, if any character does anything immoral for any reason, the right simply won't allow it. Even if the character learns a lesson in the end, they say it sets a bad example.
In both cases this leaves us with bland stories in english textbooks where no one is inequal to someone else and characters have no conflicts. In other words a fantasy world that has no bearing on reality. And this is just english, it only gets worse in history and science books. Standardized tests are also subject to this lubacrous proccess.
The worst part of all this is what a low standard both groups set for the intelligence of students. They both assume that childern absorb everything they are taught and that if a child is exposed to one mean word or unequal setting that they will be scared for life. They don't want to challenge kids or try make them think in any way (well, other than the way the groups want to anyways) which is the opposite of education. random guy | Email | Homepage | 08.31.06 - 3:27 pm | #

I noticed this as well when I was in graduate school...There was a definate push to "find" and highlight the fantastic historically important exploits of women and minorities in the American Revolution...even though by all accounts -GIVEN THAT AGE'S SOCIAL SITUATION, women and minorities didn't have a whole lot of power or cultural elan.... the problem was, by re-writing history to give each group "equal" time they undermine their own sense of historical 'PROGRESS' from a male oriented and run world to the present. AND they're silly about it too... it wasn't "gay, lesbian, transexual, bisexuals" fighting at Concord against the British and it wasn't Black slaves who started or won the Civil War but WHITE GUYS.
