I propose that we eliminate such pain relief from the medical system. People will just have to learn to endure. It will be good for their souls.

You wont get alot of argument from me on the right of an adult to put whatever he chooses into his body. The problem is my tax dollars will be used to treat their inevitable problems caused by their choices. Fix that and i say have at it.

I'm not quite sure what your point is, and hanging drug and alcohol abuse on prior traumatic experiences doesn't always wash. Sure it happens, but there's plenty of people who just like the euphoric feeling when they use, and never had a life changing traumatic experience.
Secondly, many people will use events in their lives as excuses to use, whether it actually any major impact on them or not.
Thirdly, many people have had traumatic experiences and don't drink to excess or drug.
It boils down to personal responsibility. You have a choice. If you choose to use, accept the consequences and don't play victim.
Anyway ...
You're free to self-medicate to your hearts content unless 1)the substance of choice is illegal, or 2)your self medication harms others. You can be forcibly hospitalized if medical authorities deem your self medication has become dangerous to the point of incurring serious and irreparable harm to include death.
